Elon Musk says Tesla has finally made a ready-to-deploy solar roof

Almost three years after Tesla Inc. Chief Executive Elon Musk unveiled solar roof shingles as part of his push to buy SolarCity, the automaker says it finally has a version of the tiles that it can mass produce.

“It’s been quite hard,” Musk said on a conference call late Friday. “Roofs need to last a long time. When you add electrification to the roof, it’s a fair bit of complexity.”

The sleek roof is a key part of Tesla’s push to revive its struggling solar business. Musk unveiled the product in 2016, but the company hasn’t been able to bring production up to full scale.

The photovoltaic tiles are designed to resemble regular shingles, unlike solar panels atop a roof.

with roofs + solar. Without the panels a roof is around $10K and the solar panels/roof panels would be about $20K, so that's not too bad.

So $33000 sounds about right... If she has a home to come home to with all the fires going around.

29, 310w panels for $20K an effective 9Kw. That's all the panels I can squeeze in on the south facing roof.

although I do have a standing seam roof which might be cheaper on the installation but I don't know that, and they didn't claim such.

Do you have any info on payout time for your system (the other benefit besides being able to power your freezers when power is off)?

I've taken a pretty close look at home solar but where I live (Alberta) there are no gov't rebates now and power base cost is only about 6 cents/KWH so the economics are pretty weak. As well, they allow you to feed back to the grid only what you m/l consume, averaged over a year.

30% tax credit off the $20K too. (next year would be 26% and goes away in following years)

From the salesman worksheet, for what that is worth:

final cost to me will be $14,140
Monthly electricity cost offset: $173 (current bill is avg $250/mo)
Annual electricity cost offset: $2,075, so I suppose a payback of 10 years
for an annual ROI of 14.7%

Way better than here where payouts are in the 30 to 40 year range and, with a depreciating asset. More economical to buy bonds instead...

1-2000 watt outlet per inverter that works during grid failure. Here in FL that should allow me to keep my fridges cold for days as usually after a hurricane the sky clears

from the user manual: Sounds like a manual switch

Secure power supply operation: You can connect an external outlet and a switch to the inverter in order to enable the outlet. In case of a grid failure, the outlet supplies a load with current from the PV system. When the outlet is enabled via the switch, the load is supplied with current from the PV system. The inverter automatically regulates the energy supply of the outlet depending on the solar irradiation on the PVsystem. When the outlet is enabled and a load is supplied with current from the PV system, the inverter is disconnected from the utility grid and does not feed into the utility grid.

Will see soon.

if wired wrong...when the power comes back on and nobody home.

The certified battery back up systems automatically disconnect from the grid when the power goes out and look like another circuit breaker panel next to home one.

The grid-tie inverter disconnects from the grid and switches the power received during daylight hours to the house. If you can run your freezers for five or six hours per day, that might be enough to keep them continually frozen without the need for batteries.

a smallish battery backup might be an idea so the fridges could also be run awhile at night - might keep things fresh indefinitely.

Another alternative might be a small backup generator.

two years ago but have never even serviced it for use, sitting in the garage ready to go. But I think running during the daylight hours, swapping the two off, would be plenty to keep things frozen.
