(42,770 posts)It was pretty dramatic given that the crowd was applauding and cheering group of wounded veterans (something that occurs at every Nationals home game) and then pivoted immediately to loud booing as soon as the camera moved from the vets to Trump. They shifted the camera back to the vets, which diminished the booing somewhat -- but don't be surprised to see some RWers claim the fans were booing the vets.

(42,770 posts)The camera stayed on Trump for a bit and then switched back. Since I was at the game and not watching on TV -- was any of this actually shown to the national viewing audience? My impression is that it wasn't.

Why do we militarize and nationalize sports events? Doesn't make sense.

(42,770 posts)However, in the case of DC, the military is a major part of the community. And the veterans being honored are, typically, patients being treated at Walter Reed Hospital and it does not bother me to take note of and honor the sacrifice that they have made. And I don't have any issue with the tradition of playing of the national anthem before the game and with the fact that sometimes (but not always by any means) the anthem is performed by locally-stationed members of the military. I don't see the need for jet flyovers (although they are sort of cool) and I could do without the singing of God Bless America, which dates back to 9/11.

(798 posts)We can honor them in community sports events without it being politicized or made into a nationalistic event - National Anthem, "God Bless America," or the President goose stepping onto the field(NCAA Football National Championship 2017 - Atlanta, GA). Yes, honor the Vets in the community in sporting events. NO, stop nationalizing and politicizing a football game.
