HUGE: North Carolina congressional maps ordered to be redrawn for 2020 election.

New maps won’t be appealed to SCOTUS; the ruling was made in state court and the new maps will be final.

Republicans currently hold 10 out of 13 seats in what is arguably the most gerrymandered congressional map in the nation. That’s about to change.

Bloody marvellous

Why the NC state court decision cannot be appealed but Gore v Bush, which started in the FL state system (right?) DID go to the USSC? Don’t they both involve equal representation claims and federal voting?

and it's a matter for the States. Since the North Carolina Supreme Court ruled North Carolina has to change its districts, the Supreme Court will not take the case, thus Republicans have no reason to appeal it.

If a state court (up to the state supreme court) rules that a state matter violates the state constitution, SCOTUS isn't going to get involved, unless a case can be made that the matter violates the federal constitution, & SCOTUS has already ruled that *partisan* gerrymandering doesn't.

Which means justice wins in NC!

Now if we can get rid of gerrymandering here in Ohio too....

Specifically in the above article^^^

"The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that federal judges have no power to stop politicians from drawing electoral districts to preserve or expand their party’s power, a landmark ruling that dissenters said will empower an explosion of extreme partisan gerrymandering."

What the Court in North Carolina may have done, like the one in Pennsylvania a few years ago, is specify HOW maps must be redrawn. I think Pennsylvania had a non-partisan panel draw the maps after rejecting republicans' effort to maintain their crooked advantage. If I remember correctly, North Carolina will go directly to a Court supervised non-partisan panel. If maps are drawn fairly, republicans lose big.

Here in Florida growth is causing problems for republicans. As parts of the state adds people, diversity and growth, republicans are jiggling districts all over the state and are still slowly losing state Legistlature and congressional seats. They can slow the process of losing seats, but if growth and diversity continues, they can't stop it from accelerating.

This suit is about the US House districts. The courts previously rejected the N.C. House and Senate maps. Those were redrawn under a two week deadline and detailed instructions from the courts. They were much better than anything done recently. In a separate ruling, the Court accepted this most recent set of maps.

If the General Assembly doesn't produce an acceptable map, the Court can the order the Redistricting be done by experts assigned by the Court.

I expect them to re-draw the map with much more thought than the maps they drew that targeted minority voters with precision, but it will still leave enough gerrymandering for them to preserve their majorities.

And I will add that I hope that they break up NC congressional 3 so I no longer have this new Trump lackey Murphy as my Congressman.
