Florida teen charged after punching man dressed as Donald Trump for Halloween in the face
[USA TODAY]
Stacey Henson, Naples Daily News
,USA TODAY•October 28, 2019

NAPLES, Fla. - A 14-year-old girl walked up to a man dressed as President Donald Trump as he stood in line at the Collier County fairgrounds in Naples, Florida, and allegedly punched him while her friends recorded it.

According to the Collier County Sheriff's Office, the girl faces a misdemeanor charge of battery for the 8:40 p.m. Saturday incident.

An incident report indicates that the man and his family were in line to go into a haunted house exhibit when the girl walked over to him and punched him in the jaw.

The man said the girl laughed and ran back to her place in line with about four other juveniles.

The man approached her and asked why she punched him before finding a fair worker and asking for the sheriff's deputies to report the incident.

The deputy questioned the girl and her parents. While interviewing them, a woman identifying herself as a Collier County School system employee said the incident was posted on Instagram.

The deputy told the family that due to the nature of the crime and "that the sole motivation was to strike 'Trump'," investigators may follow up with them.

The Naples Haunted Gross House is an annual Halloween-themed event at the fairgrounds.

So I guess you’re all for getting punched out by someone who disagrees with your choices?

Mask with his face and a big diaper. I would say that costume would be mocking him.

No, teenagers cannot go around assaulting strangers for any reason. Naples is a very conservative, Red City. I lived in Naples and worked for Collier School District, but the schools will not tolerate this kind of behavior. She will get a suspension.

Couldn't it also be taken as saying you think that Trump qualifies as a scary monster?

(Either meaning, I don't support people going around punching other people like that.)

...for taking a swing at me, or anyone else. I'm not fond of letting people think they can or should get away with shit like that.

And what on earth is going on in your mind that would think this could possibly lead to a totally weird and inappropriate dinner invitation? (I'm sure you meant that as some kind of joke, not a serious real life response to getting punched, but any humor therein eludes me.)

Which involves the notion that someone would wear a Trump mask because they actually hate Trump ... (ala the Nixon days) ... perhaps you'll figure it out

Oh, wait that was you ... huh ...

Upon review ... it may be that I have an odd perspective here ... as a 6'6" 260lb male, if I was walking around in a Trump mask as a PROTEST, signalling that I hate Trump, and a 14 yo. girl up and punched me ... I'd think she, and likely her family ... were probably pretty damn cool.

The idea that she'd seriously hurt me by taking a swing at me ... is fairly unfathomable.

So this may corrupt my judgement in general ... I'll admit ...

Being relatively ineffective and delivering a strong punch certainly doesn't make it "cool".

It now redirects me to a site where posters think it is not only acceptable but humorous to physically assault someone over their Halloween costume.

I am glad that the assailant was charged. I hope the investigation determines if the parents were involved and if so they face charges as well.

What determines if an action is a crime?

So I'd a 14 year old boy giggles and grabs the butt of a woman wearing one of the "sexy" costumes we can laugh that off? The victim would need as much reconstructive surgery.

So I'll avoid answering within this particular framing, other than to say there's a reason our law books have a concept known as 'degree', along with protections for minors ... and leave it at that.

And a 14 to girl punched a man wearing an Obama mask everyone would be losing their shit. There would not be one person defending the girl's action.

Therein lies the hypocrisy because in that situation we we know exactly as much about the mask wearer as we know now. Did he wear the mask of someone he admires, hates, it was the only mask left on the shelf? We do not know.

She did not punch Trump, she punched a stranger who, for all we know, could hate him and thought it was the scariest damn thing he could wear.

By the age of 14 a person should know it is not acceptable to walk up and punch someone.
