An interesting read from the USC Creativity and Brain Institute. Dial-up warning: it's heavy on pix.

It graphically describes the backfire effect and how it works.
The backfire effect, aka confirmation bias: https://effectiviology.com/backfire-effect-facts-dont-change-minds/

(10,779 posts)All the stuff following the "?" in the first and last links can (and should) be deleted, because it's about your session on those sites. This is typically the case, but you should check links after removing that junk to make sure they still work, and these do.

But, to be clear, my links DID work for you?

(10,779 posts)It's impossible to say what any given site does with that data, but that's kinda the point of removing it.

(9,090 posts)of it has to do with the need for certainty - for authoritarians certainty is more important than truth.
every one can listen change their mind and learn, so just blaming it on an emotional reaction and the amygdala is a bit of a distraction and we get back to square one - some people are assholes
sowb theory explains we have been masturbating with the wrong hand and mixing/associating sexual impulses with the wrong side of the brain. with some people it might just be taking a quick detour through the left/wrong side of the braIn for sex but that slight 'asshole' effect provided a survival advantage in rough times. that 'advantage' was selected for - maybe as a variation in amygdala, for instance. suspicion/fear certainty and competition would win over curiosity imagination and cooperation.
we've been associating impatient satisfaction-demanding reproductive impulses that are supposed to stimulate emotion, arousal, sex, orgasm, and eventually reproduction with the side of the brain that's detail oriented, has more to do with quantification (+sex = more bigger faster = greed, materialism, capitalism).
and reproductive impulses push the conclusion part of problem solving toward premature conclusion, finality, certainty, quick easy answers. if its not there that uncertainty can turn to fear and that drives humans to create artificial certainty and value structures that help us create certainty - simplifying the world into binary values of yes/no black/white right/wrong to control and eliminate uncertainty.
certainty becomes more important than truth
sowb the book also explains trump's got a very bad case. it may be brain damage or a genetic convergence. he's been diverting 'sex energy' to the left side to feed greed and it may be getting 'stuck ' there, or the right side's getting starved of it and he has to do something nuts to trigger an emotional response to release it to the pleasure centers - like attack the 'object' of desire.
the book also explains how creating certainty requires creativity and our religions and other value systems teach/burn in neural patterns that use the wayward/misplaced 'sex energy' as a reward for accepting the irrational and the denial of reality. so when the left side opens up to the starved right side to create/accept non-existent certainty some of the 'sex energy' is released to where it was supposed to go in the first place. so it feels good to lie and deny and judge people for their color or sex.
modern psych such as "political conservatism as motivated social cognition" by jost et al looked at a lot of research on authoritarianism and concluded what most authoritarians had in common was the need to avoid uncertainty - authoritarianism is sometimes measured with the uncertainty avoidance index or UAI. that need for certainty that doesn't exist is irrational. it's a need for finality, closure. but the universe is infinite and we evolved in natural environments surrounded by uncertainty.
in "the master and his emissary - the divided brain", iain gilchrist explains that the left brain "wants certainty" and facts don't matter
and wilhelm reich in his 1933 paper on fascism blamed it on sexual/religious repression - associating sex/masturbation with punishment/guilt/violence
the right hand is connected to, controlled by, the left hemisphere. sex on the wrong brain explains that we started out 50-50 right or left handed like our ape ancestors, but we had already long ago evolved a divided brain, with definite lateralization of functions, some more than others. altho most brain functions use both sides there are differences and emphasis variations. a slight 'advantage' for right handers eventually got us to 90% right handed. and variations of symptoms of sowb were emphasized in different populations.
the difference in male and female anatomy makes sowb generally worse in males and that discrepancy increases the likelyhood that males see females as a threat or source of uncertainty that needs to be controlled.
anyway it's in the book - sex on the wrong brain

certainot
(9,090 posts)that may not be rerouted with real sex but until the researchers get onto it, who knows
the idea would be to include it in sex ed but authoritarian systems have sexual repression built in to protect against the obvious cure - can't even talk about it
a major objective of our religions is apparently to increase masturbation and inhibit discussion of the topic so they can keep supplying warriors for their authoritarian protectors - but the koran actually puts it in there - "man can only have sex with his wife and that which the right hand possesses"
