As a kid, it used to confuse me when my dad was described as a veteran printer. Printing had nothing to do with his job in the Navy during WW II. But he was a union printer for his whole life.
In this case, Thank you Army Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman for honoring your oath and speaking up.

I restrict the use of the word "veteran" to someone who has received a discharge and is no longer carrying a green ID.
Wikipedia says there are variations on that now too.
