...."contrarian voters." If you put a label on a behavior, like voting for Obama and then Trump, it's somehow reassuring. Probably not valid, but there. Do you agree? Ideas about why?

You've raised thorny issues about Categorization in Philosophy, and about pigeonholing in Psychology. I've never taken a major or a minor in those topics, so I feel for you ^^ .
By wrapping a category around a concept in the mind, we are able to chunk it. We can deal with about 7 +/- 2 chunks in the mind at a time, so it is valuable to be be able to chunk things and put them in a bin. That aids associative memory (information retrieval).
Maybe the folks in the Lounge would be more congenial?

It is why some people feel better when they finally get a diagnosis for a mysterious ailment.
I t also makes something visible, it creates a kind of touchstone for conversing about it. with others, and beginning to each solutions.
It enables us to address whatever it is in the public sphere.
