That was the event: driving his sleek motorboat away from the dock in NH (it appeared he was by himself) and jet skiing with his family (there was no clip of this part).
This calling reporters to attend "the event" came only 1-1/2 hr. after Romney told them he would not be attending a campaign event today. But then he called them back for the big event of driving his boat from a dock.
I think the IRS and tax problems are making him , not to mention he's not doing well as a candidate. This clip made him look like he was falling apart in a very big way.

(30,439 posts)My guess is that the campaign called the reports back to cover him so it looks like he's "vacationing" on Labor Day just like average Americans. They're desperately trying to humanize him.
Of course it failed spectacularly and he just looked pathetic. Also, most Americans don't own boats.
Just an all around fail.

(62,444 posts)Heck, lots of people in coastal states own boats, or some friend or family who does, at least on the east coast, and the Gulf Coast, and around lake regions all over the country.
Now, whether it's a bass boat, pontoon boat, some creaky old Bayliner, or a 1968 Criss Craft with a smoky two stroke Mercury outboard, there's nothing that goes together for a lot of ordinary people than holidays and boats.
HOWEVER, when that outing consists of some lone dude whose numerous adoring family alone looks bigger than the Obama nomination speech crowd, then it looks more like the guy who got drunk, pissed off the wife and kids, and said, "Well, fuck it then. I'm goin' out on my boat" and slammed the screen door so hard he bent it again.

I mean, seriously, I never had a boat, but even I know that there is NO reason to be on one if beer is not involved.

(23,156 posts)All I could think of was how incredibly clueless Romney is. When you have that kind of wealth, when you've grown up with great wealth and become even richer as an adult, you just honestly have no idea what life is like for the vast majority of us. All of your friends are rich like you are. You all have multiple homes, expensive toys like very high end cars, and even boats. You don't ever fly on board a commercial airplane. That's just your life.
All of us are at least somewhat guilty of thinking that practically everyone else is like us. But those of us who are part of the 99% are somewhat more correct about it than one who is in the 1%.

3mill to one, 2.9 to another, 2-something million to a third............
We can look at either a) he and his campaign or completely clueless asses, b) pretending he's enjoying a day off work to celebrate Labor Day with and like the rest of the "little people" or c) He and his campaign believe the election is in the bag. d) he's exhibiting the same sadistic, mean-spirited behavior he did while at Bain.
a, b, c or d?

(13,776 posts)It was just too funny the way she said the reporters were called back "for THIS:"
{essentially home video of Romney, filmed from behind, getting onto a boat and motoring away}
Way to get the press on your side, Mitt!
It was so beyond laughable that it made me wonder whether he's starting to get cold feet and is trying to lose this thing.
