By Alexander Bolton - 10/31/19 06:00 AM EDT
Senate Republicans are taking the House impeachment proceedings against President Trump more seriously as damaging revelations against the president mount and the possibility of a quick dismissal of the charges shrinks.
Earlier this year, GOP senators pledged to quickly quash any articles of impeachment passed by the House. But as the Democrats compile more evidence that Trump withheld military assistance from Ukraine to pressure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden, they are adopting a more sober tone.
While no Senate Republican has said the charges against Trump rise to the level of being an impeachable offense, many have expressed concern over the drip-drip of damaging revelations.
(snip)
Its a more measured tone than Republicans used when the House was considering impeachment proceedings based on former special counsel Robert Muellers lengthy investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia in the 2016 presidential election and subsequent attempts to obstruct his investigation.
(snip)
Now Senate Republicans are treating the allegations that Trump improperly withheld military assistance to Ukraine in an attempt to gain a political favor much more seriously than they did the findings of the Mueller report.

((IMO, nothing has changed except that Repugs claim now they're not dismissing the situation out of hand.))

Who in their right minds can continue to support a man who believes himself above the law, thus untouchable, to continue on as POTUS? Their linking themselves to him is proving dangerous to their political futures. Good!

I think even the SCOTUS (save Brett Kavanaugh) wouldn't agree with that argument

(9,670 posts)They're just not articulating their intentions to the public as they have in the past.
They know their colleagues in the House are about to attempt to conduct a shadow impeachment, where the purported villains of Democratic lore - Hillary Clinton, George Soros, Barack Obama, Eric Holder, Nancy Pelosi, et al. - will be subpoenaed for crimes having nothing to do with Trump or his litany of malfeasances. This will be a trial by FOX intended to obfuscate, confuse and enrage the Democrats, and to pave the path for a no impeachment vote by the Senate.
You know it's what they're going to do.

Moscow Mitch has a lucrative business deal with a Russian oligarch, and NOBODY is going to get in the way of that. USA be damned, Moscow Mitch puts himself and his money above all else. Sadly, the gop seems oblivious to his manipulations. How is the investigation into his wife going?

(10,056 posts)I was listening rather than watching so I dont know who said this, but the comment was that Republicans are waiting until the November 5 election results to gauge Democratic support. Theyre watching two elections especially: the governor of Kentucky and the race in Virginia. If Democrats win, it could cause some Republicans to change their stance. Theyre more worried about holding on to the Senate than holding on to the presidency because with a Senate majority they can just stifle any serious policy changes as they did with Obama.

very suspect.

(4,723 posts)Especially those who are standing for election. Considering the seriousness of the charges, they run the risk of looking like the partisan hacks they are if they it blow off. They need Trump's base, yes, but most of them will need more than that to win reelection. I'm sure not a few of them are nervously doing the math and will tread a little lightly. I suspect that they will be considering their gravy trains, and not what is fundamentally just, but they will be considering.

(5,500 posts)Essentially Clinton lied about a consenting sexual relationship in a deposition. Yes, that is perjury. It was also a private lawsuit brought against Clinton. Not trying to excuse it, just trying to add context.
Trump used his position as president to bride/blackmail another country's leader by withholding federal aid (approved by Congress) unless said leader agreed to open a criminal investigation into one of his political opponents (who also happens to be our country's former vice president).
I don't see how Republicans, especially those who are leftovers from the Senate in 98-99, can do anything but vote to convict. They are essentially saying lying about a blow job is worse that putting our national security in harm's way.
Graham, who was in the House, and McConnell, who was in the Senate, were very much in favor of convicting and removing Clinton. So let's start there.

Putin is the actual leader of the US. Those RepubliCON Senators will never, ever vote to impeach Trump because Putin has already told them how to vote.

(588 posts)The Senate Repugs are pretending to be open-minded because it looks better politically.
But it doesn't matter how serious the charges are, or how strong the evidence is -- They're going to protect Trump regardless.
This is just a pretense.
