Laura Ingraham Told Moscow Mitch to Jump and He Did

Laura Ingraham Told Moscow Mitch to Jump and He Did, Feetfirst into Trump Quagmire

On Tuesday night, Fox's Laura Ingraham challenged Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to step up and defend Donald Trump. It's "McConnell's moment," she said, to defend Trump against "the Democrats' political reign of terror."

"He needs to show the American people that the GOP stands united behind the man that they elected to lead this country, run our foreign policy, help advance our economy," she said. "McConnell needs to make sure that every Republican keeps pressure on Pelosi, Schiff and Schumer." That was a possible rebuke to McConnell's brief foray into being principled when he obliquely chided conservatives for attacking Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, a key impeachment witness. "I'm not going to question the patriotism of any of the people who are coming forward," McConnell said Tuesday, while Fox News was robustly doing just that.

McConnell apparently heard Ingraham loud and clear. After the House released the legislation outlining the process for impeachment, McConnell jumped into the fight with both feet, attacking Schiff and Pelosi just like she told him to. On the floor Wednesday morning, McConnell said House Democrats were denying Trump "the most basic rights of due process."

"Yesterday, House Democrats released their much-hyped resolution which was advertised as bringing fairness and due process into Speaker Pelosi and Chairman Schiff's closed-door partisan inquiry. […] It falls way short," he said, finding refuge in the last defense of Republican scoundrels: process. Which is, of course, bullshit. The House Judiciary Committee, knowing this was going to be the argument, pre-refuted it with a chart and a memo detailing the ways in which this inquiry is following the same procedures for the Nixon and Clinton impeachments and the ways in which they're giving Trump even more "protections" than those presidents got.

Not that it will make a difference to Moscow Mitch. But it's a pretty good indication of where his mindset is going into the trial the Senate will face to complete the process. Spoiler alert: it will be a farce.
