And it has nothing to do with taxes. It's because Florida is one of the few States that doesn't allow your property to be seized in settlement of civil liability lawsuits. Florida is famous as a safe zone for crooks for that reason. O.J. Simpson lost the wrongful death civil suit over the murders of Nicole Simpson and Ron Goldman, and moved to Florida to avoid paying the $33.5 million in damages.
In my opinion, Trump is moving to Florida to avoid losing most of his alleged wealth in civil lawsuits after all this is over. I'm pretty sure he did it at the urging of his kids, and current wife, who know that, even though Trump may escape a perp walk in an orange jumpsuit, his criminal malfeasance could cost him a lot of money.
Just my two cents.

(1,115 posts)I don't remember her name but we had coffee together every morning
and watched tv. Our jobs were unrelated so the only time I seen her
was at coffee. This trial went on forever and we expected the obvious,
O.J. was going to get the chair.
We were shocked at the verdict and this lady was in tears, she was bawling.
But, life goes on.
I remember. back in '68, the Ohio State Buckeyes beat O.J, and U.S.C.
in a National Championship game, I was in the Army in Berlin, Germany.
One of my proudest moments.
O.J still has to live with a guilty conscious.

(16,846 posts)Of course, if he is impeached by the House and removed by the Senate, he will lose the type of SS protection that he gets now, just as soon as his replacement is sworn in.

(11,885 posts)And selling stuff off and hiding his money knowing they could get his property, or lawyers are draining him quickly. Maybe he fears NY police would arrest him there. Maybe soon his lawyers will be quitting , like others have, then we find out he wouldn't pay them.

(21,482 posts)Since some of his crimes involve violations of NYS laws (eg his charities frauds) can he avoid prosecution for tax evasion and other crimes in NY by moving out of state?
(On edit: He is safe from criminal prosecution in NY while in the WH. By changing state residence now he will not be a NY resident whem he leaves the WH.)
If he is planning to sell off NY properties as someone else suggested, is he going to put the money in untouchable offshore accounts so he can flee the country as soon as he is either removed by a Senate conviction or by losing the 2020 vote?
I wonder if Russian pals will buy his properties.
Even if he escapes prosecution there are still his traitorous crime pals in Congress who need to be prosecuted.
If the Senate convicts, can Congress then revoke his SS protection? We need this albatross and his offspring off of our necks.
Wish there were a way to revoke his citizenship on grounds of being a threat to our national security. Let one of his dictator pals naturalize him for their nation. Or let him and his brats be without a country.

snip of article:
On October 7, 1885, Friedrich Trump, a 16-year-old German barber, bought a one-way ticket for America, escaping three years of compulsory German military service. He had been a sickly child, unsuited to hard labor, and feared the effects of the draft. It might have been illegal, but America didnt care about this law-breakingat that time, Germans were seen as highly desirable migrantsand Trump was welcomed with open arms. Less than two weeks later, he arrived in New York, where he would eventually make a small fortune.
***
He married a woman from his German hometown, Kallstadt, where his parents had owned vineyards, and attempted to return home with his fortune. But when his draft dodging came to the fore, the couple lost their Bavarian citizenship and were obliged to return to America for good.

(15,540 posts)He was already reviled enough in New York, but after his little stint in the White House and all that's going to come out in the impeachment, he knows he won't ever be able to show his ugly orange mug in public in New York any longer. He'd be about as welcome in any of their establishments as herpes.
Besides, he's probably putting everything into Iwanka's name to keep it in the family.

(24,653 posts)It has to do with primary residence. Moving to FL doesn't get you off the hook for paying damages awarded in a civil suit. In Florida, your primary residence is exempt from forfeiture.
The law is intended to prevent a lawsuit from rendering someone homeless. I think that is what is being exploited here.
wnylib
(21,482 posts)the NY property? It would still be possible to seize NY assets?
Pacifist Patriot
(24,653 posts)Has a law that protects your primary residence. That is why he needs to establish FL as his residence. Mar-a-lago becomes primary residence rather than Trump tower penthouse. That is what is saved.
Nevilledog
(51,112 posts)Florida law allows for certain protections in regards to bankruptcy and perhaps seizure pursuant to some civil judgements. However, I'd be very surprised if these protections shield someone from criminal forfeiture.
This is outside my criminal law expertise, so I'm ready for correction.
Pacifist Patriot
(24,653 posts)But at the very least, while it affords him some property protections he wouldn't have in NY, it does not protect him from the entirety of civil suit judgments.
I'm curious about the criminal law forfeitures too, I haven't a clue about that.
