Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDid anyone catch Mika on MJ this morning pissed about Ryan's lies?
Mika is a runner, so his lie about his marathon time really made it personal for her.
She even turned around to the crowd and asked, (as best as I can recall) "Who's a runner here?" "You DON'T lie about your time, you just don't".
She was truly disgusted. It was GREAT!

(34,413 posts)his political lies which are much, much worse. Oh well, if it penetrates that this guy is a liar maybe they won't believe anything he says.

(25,415 posts)Ryan tells lies about that GM plant, about the debt commission. But this one about his marathon running time is all anyone talks about? Sheesh.

(7,768 posts)Thinking about all the coverage, for example, about Gore "inventing" the internet. We're STILL hearing that bullshit.
But for some reason, certain things stick when other more important things don't.

(39,961 posts)Why would he lie about something like that unless he was trying to make himself look good. That speaks to his ego, and how he lies just to lie. If he would lie about something trivial, you know he would lie about anything. I think that is what has set so many people off. They expect politicians to lie about their policies and their political opponents, but to lie about something like that is pretty devastating to a candidate's integrity.
Not that Paul Ryan has ever displayed that he has even a shred of integrity.

I have taught my daughter that if someone will lie to you about the little things; you certainly can't trust them on the big things.

(108 posts)that could be quite effective.
Possible script.
"Paul Ryan has made lots of claims during this campaign. In one, in response to a question from Hugh Hewitt how fast the self proclaimed fitness expert had run a marathon, Paul Ryan replied, 'Under three, high twos. I had a two hour and fifty-something.' If true, Ryan's time would have been, according to Runner's World magazine, the fastest ever run by someone on a national ticket. Except it wasn't true. When Runners' World tried to verify the claim, it discovered only one marathon run by Mr. Ryan, when he was 20 years old, which he completed in four hours and 1 minute. Respectable, but nowhere near as impressive as an under three hour marathon, and slower than marathons by George W. Bush, John Edwards, and Sarah Palin. When the misrepresentation was discovered, Mr. Ryan tried to walk back his claim, but the question still remains, if someone will lie to you about the little things, can you trust them on the big things?"

(61,676 posts)Unfortunately, too many Americans are intellectually lazy. They can't be bothered to figure out what politicians are talking about when it comes to budgets, numbers, all that complicated stuff (that all our lives depend on but never mind). Lying about a marathon time is something most people can easily grasp. It's simple.

Now running, runners do not make up their time. It's simply not done, period. Why it is penetrating, and yup, will lead to the what else is he lying about? I mean in the whole scheme of things the time at a marathon matters little, but medicare does.

So millions of people this morning heard (once again) that Paul Ryan is a fucking liar.
And THAT is a good thing.

(13,603 posts)think you are so well loved and respected that no one will rat one you. It's exactly the opposite. Someone that felt that way about you will be doubly disgusted about a lie like that and blow the whistle. At least in some cases. Devout partisans will keep their mouths shut but you'll find someone it pisses off enough.
That's like lying about military service. Real veterans won't usually let that stand. Of course there are exceptions and phony accusations like the Swift Boat thing. There have to be a few that could have backed up what we know about Bush too. It's more likely he was around so few veterans that there aren't that many that would remember much. The rest are right-wingers that held their noses and let it slide.

(22,772 posts)Folks already assume politicians are a bit smarmy and lie about policy.
The marathon lie cuts to the heart of his character. Regular, average Americans can relate to training hard and trying to beat your own personal best. People set their goals and are proud of their earned accomplishments. They also know the BSers who lie about their times and they know the type person who would lie about it. Yes, he has huge lies and little lies but this one resonates because it cuts to lying about an accomplishment that many people stride to attain and he didn't earn and people relate to that.

(5,810 posts)Of his character. Or more to the point, his LACK of character. A man who will lie about things like his marathon time is a man who will play fast and loose with facts that matter. Why lie about something like the time he ran in a marathon 20 years ago? Why indeed. But if you are a person who is dishonest in things that really don't matter, you will lie about more important things. And the really stupid thing about it is that if he had given an honest answer, his time STILL would have been a decent showing. Instead, he has brought another shit storm on himself because he just couldn't resist the temptation to make himself look better than he was.
So glad for the records in this matter that Runner's World was able to consult and report back to the people. One more lie in the list that just gets longer and longer every day. When are the people who so love this guy gonna get it? He is a liar of epic proportions and if he is in a bigger position of power that is not apt to change. If anything it will be worse! Eeeegads......
Didn't see Mika this morning, by the way, but glad to hear she did something useful besides pour the vodka. I DID see her do that. Do they know how dumb that looks at 7 a.m.???? And their endless conversations about her mixing Ambien and vodka also wore very thin. They are not doing a service to their viewers by pretending that is funny or passes in any way for humor.

(14,887 posts)here? I am not a runner, have never been a runner. Tried it for a while back in the late 70s - just not for me. I know nothing about the running world. But being fresh off the Olympics, I knew ryan was B-essing his way thru that part of the interview. He was trying to enhance his rep as president of the 'He-Man Fitness Club'. Isn't he the one that mentions the marathon? As in but I don't run marathons anymore. And he only ran ONE, 20 years ago.
I have friends who run, two who do run marathons - most do the shorter distances. With one or two, their zeal borders obsession but I get it! They know their races - where, when, & the times.
So ryan dives in the deep end, on a topic he knows very little about and then tries to shine it on by bringing up A marathon and lies about his time.

(12,008 posts)Except every once in a great while, I don't watch cable news. I know who Joe Scarborough is and I knew that he had a show, and I may have even known that it was called "Morning Joe", but I'm way too far removed to call all of that up in my brain rolodex from "MJ". I certainly know who Zbigniew Brzezinski, but I had no idea that he had a daughter of any prominence, and certainly wouldn't recognize her by first name alone.
I find that I'm often baffled by posts on DU for reasons like this. I think I do pretty well with keeping up with current events by getting my news from the radio and internet, but various personalities involved in the info-tainment aspects of "news" are strangers to me.
