@yashar
The White House says the president nor any senior administration official was aware in advance that the presidents eldest son was going to tweet out the name of the alleged whistleblower.
Ive also asked if they approve of his decision to do so.

(18,837 posts)Trump Jr. sent the tweet on Wednesday despite concerns for the whistleblowers safety.
In his tweet, the presidents son linked to a Breitbart.com article which speculated that the person who blew the whistle on the presidents dealing with Ukraine had also worked closely with anti-Trump forces during the 2016 campaign.
Raw Story has chosen not to reprint the name of the alleged whistleblower at this time.

If that person passed it to Breitbart, why wouldn't he pass it to Trump or to Jr.

(11,320 posts)name (or names) has been circulating in some circles for several weeks. Apparently without attribution, or any real confirmation .. thus leading to uncertainty that name (or names) really was the WB. So if Breitbart or someone else published a name, it's entirely possible that it was an unconfirmed "sources say" attempt at exposure (and not from official or classified sources at all).
What is without doubt is that Rs are playing a dirty game here .. they KNOW it .. and that's why a lot of prominent Republicans are NOT wading into these waters.

(18,837 posts)...and if you see the story I shared above in the comments, I don't know if THEIR "sources" were correct. They might have actually "outed" the whistleblower, or someone else, which makes it even worse.

(18,837 posts)It was a stupid and unconscionable move on his part, but if it was Breitbart who actually did the "outing" and he sent it in a tweet, he's pointing to their accusation, not making one of his own. Doesn't make it right, doesn't mean he should walk away from this unscathed, but I'm guessing that would be his "defense."

(62,444 posts)Correct. It's weird how people just believe and repeat stuff they've heard somewhere.
Don Jr. is a miserable piece of shit, but citing a Breitbart article is not a crime for anyone.

(62,444 posts)Are you simply saying it is a crime because you believe it to be one, or do you have an actual statute in mind?

... Derek Harvey, a former adviser to President Trump who now works for Nunes on the House Intelligence Committee, handed notes to House Republicans identifying the whistleblowers name ahead of closed-door depositions in the Trump impeachment inquiry in hopes of getting the name in the record of the proceedings, which Intelligence Committee chair Adam Schiff vowed to release, sources told The Daily Beast.
The allegation follows a Saturday Washington Post report that Republican lawmakers and aides have repeatedly used the whistleblowers purported name during the secret depositions ...

President Trump said Monday that the White House is trying to find out the identity of the intelligence community whistleblower who filed a complaint about the presidents interactions with Ukraine.
Were trying to find out about a whistleblower, Trump told reporters in the Oval Office when asked if he knows the persons identity, alleging that they reported things that are incorrect.
The presidents remarks came one day after he demanded to meet the whistleblower and cast doubt on the individuals complaint on Twitter ...

President Trump on Sunday said the media should name the whistleblower behind a complaint about his dealings with Ukraine and that such reporting would be "doing the public a service" ...
"They know who it is. You know who it is. You just don't want to report it. CNN knows who it is, but you don't want to report it. And you know, you would be doing the public a service if you did," he added.
The whistleblower's identity is not public. Trump did not give evidence for his claim that CNN or newspapers know the person's identity ...

... Walter Shaub, an ex-director of the Office for Government Ethics, said in a tweet that the Kentucky senator would be committing "one of the most shameful breaches a legislator could commit" if he did choose to out the whistleblower, and called the proposal "shocking."
He also said that the suggestion alone was a "dangerous form of intimidation" that would have "lasting repercussions."
The former ethics director's condemnation of Paul came after The Hill reported that the senator told reporters he "probably will" disclose the identity of the Ukraine whistleblower, whose complaint about the July phone call between President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskiy sparked the ongoing impeachment inquiry ...
