Health insurance

I called CVS the other day to check on a prescription. While on hold, they had the usual informational stuff about how wonderful they are, etc. One of the points made during this hold time was that CVS accepts prescription insurance from more than 5,000 insurance companies. 5,000. Okay, maybe they have such fantastic systems that they can easily keep track of all the policies, deductibles, co-pays, restrictions, etc. But I can't help but wonder how many people are required to monitor, track, or otherwise deal with 5,000 insurance companies. And then carry that over to all the other prescription providers. Just imagine the administrative component of the cost of our prescriptions.

5,000 insurance companies. I had no idea.
