The claim is everything was humming along just fine until the GOP lost control of Congress. Of course, no one actually presses these bozos to explain how a Dem congress made any difference. Idiot teahadists and lazy journalists -- a potent combo.

One response I have gotten several times is "the Dems didn't do anything to stop it".

is when they no longer own all three branches of government and they are
no longer able to plunder the Treasury and drive the country into the ditch.

But completely misleading. All it meant was that W couldn't ram stuff through with no opposition anymore. On paper we had a 50-49-1 majority in the Senate, but one of our 50 was Turncoat Joe, who could always be counted on to vote with the Reds, and even with Bernie Sanders in our corner, we couldn't overcome a filibuster. We had control of the House, but again, not the 2/3 majority needed to override a presidential veto. And unlike Democrats, Republican presidents don't get a single iota of flak for vetoing a budget if it has something in it that they don't like- like social programs & not enough billions for "defense".

As long as W. held the veto pen, legislation to change the nation's course could not pass.
