The rumor is that Ron Paul will make an announcement on Jay Leno tonight. I take it with a grain of salt, but it would certainly be interesting if he runs third party or throws his weight behind the Libertarian party.

(23,864 posts)...how an independent run would garner at least 15% of the votes in a 2012 race. He also brought up something interesting: This is the longest period of extreme anger the American public has had at the failure of government. I could see both of those things being true and I could also see them impacting Romney's campaign almost exclusively.
I don't know if I'd "like" to see such a thing happen, though. Too much dice rolling, even if I think it would take away from Romney.

(22,871 posts)surprised if he breaks from the GOP. They've been treating him like GOP's little secret for some time, this last convention rule change was a slap in the face. I also wonder what effect angry Paulites refusing to vote GOP will have on depressing the GOP vote.

(44,173 posts)I think Paul was genuinely open to endorsing the ticket if his supporters and his issues were treated with respect, but that did not happen at the convention.

(6,960 posts)There are very few states, I believe, that are still open to petition or file onto the ballot as an independent presidential candidate.
Now, I suppose Gary Johnson could resign as the Libertarian Party's presidential nominee and then Ron Paul could be appointed to the vacancy ... but that is about the only way I think Paul could be on the ballot in very many states. And who thinks Gary Johnson would do such a thing after all he has gone through this year?
Of course, Paul could endorse Johnson, but that would put a severe handicap on this son's future prospects in the Repuglican Party.
More likely Ron Paul is going to endorse Rmoney ... or announce he is leaving the country to live in retirement in the libertarian paradise of Somalia.

(49,212 posts)Between application dates and sore loser rules that prevent running independent after losing a primary, there probably aren't many places where he's not completely SOL.

(22,871 posts)the Libertarian Party as opposed to being the GOPs perennial red headed step child. Or, his FANaticS could just be wishful thinking.

LET IT BE SO, RON.
I can see it happening, easily. Ron must know that R&R are going exactly nowhere. He hates them, so that's a bonus. He can rake in some good campaign bucks, he gets more attention and he gets to run around the country sputtering his hateful philosophy of selfishness and greed. All win for Paul, plus he gets to enjoy watching his clueless wasteoid groupies fawning all over him, feeding his ego, for just a little longer. What's to lose?
