The fact that Republicans are offering any defence whatsoever of Donald Trump is demonstrative of how low the GOP has sunk.
His crimes are indisputable, from the thousands of lies told to his complete defiance of the Constitution. His corruption is blatantly obvious. He has lined his own pockets at the taxpayers expense, surrounded himself with a combination of incompetent and/or criminal staffers and appointees and through it all, he has argued that his behaviour cannot be restricted or even questioned, because he is above the law.
The self-proclaimed most transparent president in history has repeatedly obstructed justice by refusing to produce documents, hiding discussions hes had with world leaders, and decreeing that his minions ignore legal subpoenas. He has attempted to shut down legitimate investigations into his actions, and has refused to acknowledge the legitimacy of every procedure that might expose his crimes.
And now we know for a fact that the pResident tried to extort dirt against his political opponent from our allies, most specifically Ukraine, in exchange for the financial aid they need to defend themselves against Russian aggression.
Since his first day in office, Trump has never failed to put the interests of Vladimir Putin above the interests of our own country, from declaring that Putin had nothing to do with the attack on the 2016 election to delivering Vlads most fervent desires abandoning the Kurds, destroying our relationships with our allies, undermining our most sacred institutions, and now attempting to exonerate Russia while blaming Ukraine for Putins actions.
If a Democratic president had done anything even close to what Trump has done, the Democratic party would tell the GOP to hold their beers while they dragged him out of the White House themselves kicking and screaming, if need be. They would have gone to the president and told him that if he didnt resign, they would begin impeachment hearings against him themselves and would proudly vote to remove him from office.
What we will see in the upcoming weeks is a bunch of shameless Republican ass-kissers coming up with every excuse in the book for their pResidents clearly illegal behaviour. They will do their best to obstruct, to disrupt, and to make a mockery of the impeachment process. They will pull out all the stops in order to defend a man they know to be guilty of the illegal actions he is accused of and they will do so it without any regard for the facts or the truth.
The Republicans will prove beyond any reasonable doubt that they are completely devoid of morals, principles, or any desire to uphold the oath of office they each swore.
This is what weve come to as a nation a battle for our democracys survival waged between truth-tellers and perjurers, between facts and outrageous lies, between those willing to risk everything in order to expose the truth and those willing to sacrifice everything we once held sacrosanct in order to protect a blatant traitor.
As we hear the testimony of career civil servants with impeccable credentials being maligned, as we watch Republican sycophants try to defend the clearly indefensible, as we are bombarded with incoherent tweets from the imbecile in the Oval Office, I do believe that the truth will ultimately prevail.
Whether the Republicans vote to remove their Traitor-in-Chief from office is no longer the point. The point is that they are about to expose themselves as traitors themselves.

(33,392 posts)I expect no let-up in tv punditry proclaiming that both sides are equivalent, simply because it generates more ad revenue.

(15,548 posts)I sure hope so. It doesn't always. I want to believe that it does, but I'm only cautiously optimistic. I also want to believe that the majority of my fellow Americans care about preserving our democracy and our Constitution, but I have my doubts there also. The majority of Americans are not as politically aware or knowledgeable as those of us who are on DU. They won't be watching it live on TV, and will rely on the media mouthpieces to sum things up for them in easy to understand, five minute soundbites because that's all the time they want to expend on educating themselves.
