Actually, if the rejection of EBT ever happens, all it will cause is a civil rights lawsuit. EBT cards are US currency and the owner of a grocery store is simply not allowed to refuse to sell you groceries because you are black and he doesn't like your form of payment. Law enforcement would sort this out rather quickly.

Further, any vendor crazy enough to take any of this at all seriously will be in the sticks, and odds are the usual EBT card holder he/she will see will be white.

They would lose their customers. It would be especially ridiculous in any area with more than one grocery because the store (s) that still accept them will get the other stores customers. Big chains, including Walmart wouldn't do this because they know that it is bad for their business.
The only stores that would do this would end up going out if business because of loss of business, being sued, and possibly being boycotted.

If it happens and I seriously doubt it will, it will be intended to provoke a confrontation, as a premise for violence. If it does happen anywhere, people need to back off and get a lawyer. Equal accomodation under the law will not allow this when it comes to purchasing food. The business owner who tries it will quickly be providing alot of free lunches.

Those same folks have been saying this same "watch out for the evil city folk looters" stuff for a very long time--I remember this even being a subject back in the 60's. The basic mindset there is a combination of both racism and fear, and we ALL know that shit just doesn't go away. Back in the 60's one of the "favorite" reasons for the coming melt down was any kind of nuke event. They figured you were gonna need your guns and ammo (along with a secured armed compound) to be able to fight off the plague of hungry looters that were certain to come steal your food and all the stuff you had so "prudently" stockpiled for that inevitable day.

I remember hearing my dad talk about how the cities would turn into absolute war zones if the food delivery system was ever seriously disrupted, and I remember asking him how he thought the bad guys were supposed to GET to where all the food was supposed to be. I don't think he ever did answer. Certainly, Dad was so sick by the time Katrina took out the gulf coast he didn't have the energy to engage in a debate as that collapse unfolded. He was fighting a different survival battle that he ultimately did not win, and no amount of guns or food stores were gonna help him.

This most recent incarnation of fear is just a repeat of what has already been, and the logic is still as flawed now as it was back in the 60's when Manson took his family out to the Spann ranch. Its that same old racism and the same old paranoia that just refuses to die. They "update" the reasons and the horrible images from time to time, but the basic fear remains unchanged.

Don't get me wrong--I have no beef with folks who live someplace prone to things like a hurricane or earthquake who keep some emergency supplies on hand. Growing up in East bumblefuck Illinois, I am used to the reality that if mother nature want to kick your ass it's gonna happen, and there will be times when a trip to the grocery store just isn't possible. You keep some stuff in the pantry that has a shelf life, and figure you may have a couple meals in there that are a little less popular with the picky eaters in the family.

What a lot of the hard core "survivalist" folks do, however, is not even close to keeping a pantry with a few days' worth of meals. I know one guy that has a barrel full of lead shot and slugs that can be melted down and cast as bullets. He also keeps reloading supplies like wadding and gunpowder so he can make his own ammo if need be. (He's also a gun collector, and I am not EVEN gonna begin to list the guns this guy has stashed around his house...) This is not the crew that buys gold or diamonds as a form of currency if society melts down, these are the guys that buy weapons. They actually have conversations about what kind of KNIFE you need to carry. It is a mindset that is completely alien to most of us, and thankfully, not terribly common. These guys buy a kerjillion pounds of rice and dried beans and store that forever against the day they might need it. (Would YOU want to be stuck in a bunker with some asshole that ate nothing but beans for a couple of months?)

I figured out a long time ago that people like that you are not ever gonna be able to talk sense to them. I wish them wrong and then leave them to eat all those buggy beans and rice.

My Mom still lives in the house.

We get plenty of snow during the winter, and sometimes it is impossible to get to town, even with an SUV. All you can do is sit and wait for the plows to clear things out.

I always encourage my Mom to have canned food in the house, so that she can eat even if the power goes out (which does happen on occasion, but not usually for very long). She has a wood burning stove for heat in the living room, and I always either bring in wood myself in the autumn or remind her to get a friend to do it so that she wouldn't have to go outside in bad weather to get wood. It's just sensible when you live in the countryside in an area in which Mother Nature has an occasional tantrum.

However, those survivalists who are waiting for the bad guys to make the 45 mile trek from a small urban area to the south are completely whacko. Thank heavens most of them are satisfied just to hang out and talk about scarey stuff happening.

Cities actually are pretty tenuous. It seems like they have lots of food because the shelves are always stocked but it only takes a short disruption of the food supply for that to end.

I live in Chicago, one that is rapidly seeing the middle class flee to the 'burbs because of our stupidly high property and sales taxes and poor public schooling system. I see none of this in town. I don't see anybody getting ready to riot or threatening to riot or anything like that. In fact, Chicago's crime rate is down, way down from last year.

None of this is happening. Everybody who's still in the city is cool, calm and collected.
