The GOP doesn’t care. They’d rather see Trumpy as a dictator than challenge his authority. That’s incontrovertible fact. If they don’t convict, say goodbye to the Constitution.

and helped by a confluence of factors, not all of which will repeat in 2020:

1. He won states the GOP hardly ever wins- Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin- and only by a narrow margin. Those states trended Blue in 2018 and (re-)elected Democratic governors. Not an absolute guarantee of how the
2. There are no serious third-or-fourth party candidates running (so far) to help split the vote
3. Hillary Clinton won't be on the ballot
4. Donald Trump is no longer an "unknown". He is now a well-known quantity and we all know what he's about, what kinds of policies he favors, and most people just frankly find him offensive
5. James Comey is gone and no longer in any position to investigate the Democratic nominee or announce any last-minute investigation bombshells. This part *could* be played by Bill Barr at this time, however, Barr doesn't have the kind of positive "reputation" that Comey had at the time and is pretty well considered a partisan hack for Trump.
6. Democratic anger and disunity (re: Hillary v. Bernie). This one could still potentially be a problem depending on who we nominate but, by and large, I get the perception that we will be largely unified in our resolve to get rid of Trump. It's too bad we didn't have that same resolve in 2016, but "Que Sera Sera."

that impeachment will chasten him, but it's a black mark on his permanent historical record (which will drive him crazy) and all of the GOPers whom vote to acquit will have to face their constituents- not all of whom are rabid Trump-Putin cultists.
