Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThe weather forecast tonight in Charlotte is for a 40% chance of thunderstorms.
http://www.weather.com/weather/today/USNC0121That's from The Weather Channel. The campaign may have a different forecast, but on the basis of the weather prediction, they made the decision to move tonight's events indoors to a far smaller venue.
Personally, I can accept that at face value. In fact, were it up to me, I'd never choose an outdoor venue for a significant one-time, non-postponable event and am actually glad they're moving.
The GOP, on the other hand, sees it a little differently. They're saying the Dems did this because they didn't have enough tickets sold to fill the original venue.
Does anyone have any insight?

(21,967 posts)The weather has been very changeable here in Charlotte. One minute its clear, the next it's raining hard. But the risk at the stadium was not rain, it was lightning. You can't have 65,000 people in an open-air stadium when there is a lightning storm going on. At a sporting event they would clear the stadium and make everyone go inside and wait it out, but at an important political event that has to be timed with national television, you can't do that.
They moved the event because there was a decent risk that there will be lightning on Thursday night, which would endanger the crowd and disrupt the entire event. They would have held it outside if they could, and the stadium would have been packed.

(32,611 posts)I feel badly for all of the volunteers that I have been working with here in central NC that have tickets for tomorrow night. They put in the hours to get those tickets and now don't know where they will be. I hope they have a good alternate venue for them but it won't be the same as being in the arena.
Obviously the choice of the larger venue was designed to help move NC into the win column.

(131,127 posts)Heard many thousands ticket holders, and 'waiters,' unable to attend due to change of venue, but Dems interested in welfare of the people, as we know.
Agree, wouldn't plan outdoor event, except places like Denver etc where likiehood of such storms nil. DO understand why they wanted NC, tho.
P.S., daughter thinking of wedding around Solomons, some lovely outdoor venues!!!

(35,015 posts)Whatever the reason, of course they're going to say the move is because Obama couldn't fill the place. Part of their lie of the moment, that Dems aren't enthusiastic and Obama is losing support.
The jealous and desperate GOP will say ANYTHING.

(33,956 posts)I also wonder about a threat to security as well?
But the weather is a very good reason as well.
Obama has NEVER had a problem filling a stadium...and addressing his party faithful would certainly not be the time for that to happen.
