American Airlines apologizes for making woman change 'Hail Satan' shirt

American Airlines has issued an apology to a woman after flight attendants made her remove her "Hail Satan" shirt in order to remain on the plane.

Swati Runi Goyal of Key West was aboard an American Airlines flight from Florida to Nevada in October when a crew member made her change her shirt or get kicked off the plane, according to BuzzFeed News.

"It's an ironic shirt," Goyal told the news outlet. "People usually laugh at it, or they give me a thumbs up because they understand the meaning behind it."

She is not a Satan worshipper but is a member of the Satanic Temple and bought the shirt in support of the organization.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Satanic_Temple

The Satanic Temple is a nontheistic religious group based in United States.[1][2][3][4] The Temple is recognized as a church for the purposes of tax exemption,[5] with chapters in 13 states and Canada.[6] The group uses Satanic imagery to promote egalitarianism, social justice, and the separation of church and state. Their stated mission is "to encourage benevolence and empathy among all people". The group was co-founded by Lucien Greaves, the organization's spokesperson, and Malcolm Jarry.[7] The Satanic Temple has utilized satire, theatrical ploys, humor, and direct legal action in their public campaigns to "generate attention and prompt people to reevaluate fears and perceptions", and to "highlight religious hypocrisy and encroachment on religious freedom".[8][9][10]...( Clip)

The Satanic Temple has seven fundamental tenets:

One should strive to act with compassion and empathy towards all creatures in accordance with reason.
The struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions.
One's body is inviolable, subject to one's own will alone.
The freedoms of others should be respected, including the freedom to offend. To willfully and unjustly encroach upon the freedoms of another is to forgo your own.
Beliefs should conform to our best scientific understanding of the world. We should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit our beliefs.
People are fallible. If we make a mistake, we should do our best to rectify it and resolve any harm that may have been caused.
Every tenet is a guiding principle designed to inspire nobility in action and thought. The spirit of compassion, wisdom, and justice should always prevail over the written or spoken word....( More)

Does not mean they do them. "Chritians" lie about the activities of other religions and always have.

I would more uncomfortable sitting next to someone wearing a pro-Chrisitan or Pro-Jesus tee shirt since they are more likely to invade my space with their proselytizing. I grew up with evangelical "Christians" and as a group they have been the most unpleasant people I have ever had the misfortune to be around.

See Post #2 which has a link to the Wikipedia article about the Satanic Temple - which is the organization that produces the tee shirt the woman was wearing.

Or go straight to the source:

The mission of The Satanic Temple is to encourage benevolence and empathy among all people, reject tyrannical authority, advocate practical common sense and justice, and be directed by the human conscience to undertake noble pursuits guided by the individual will. Politically aware, Civic-minded Satanists and allies in The Satanic Temple have publicly opposed The Westboro Baptist Church, advocated on behalf of children in public school to abolish corporal punishment, applied for equal representation where religious monuments are placed on public property, provided religious exemption and legal protection against laws that unscientifically restrict women's reproductive autonomy, exposed fraudulent harmful pseudo-scientific practitioners and claims in mental health care, and applied to hold clubs along side other religious after school clubs in schools besieged by proselytizing organizations.

Even the Church of Satan founded by Anton LeVey does not worship Satan or sacrifice any creatures - and they do not use children for sex:
Do Satanists perform sacrifices?
No. We are atheists. The only people who perform sacrifices are those who believe in supernatural beings who would consider a sacrifice to be some form of payment for a request or form of worship. Since we do not believe in supernatural beings there is no reason for a Satanist to make a sacrifice of any sort.

I heard that Satanism supports sex with children and other ways to harm them—how do you justify that?
Satanism has strong rules prohibiting sexual activity with children and non-human animals. In fact, if a Church of Satan member abuses children sexually or otherwise, his membership is automatically terminated without possibility for re-instatement. The Church of Satan also does not accept anyone who is not legally adult as an Active Member. In Satanism, sexual activity is only advocated between consenting adults.

It's the "Christian" sects that are afraid of anything other than their own little delusional bubbles that push this false narrative. It's the same crap that has been said about Jews and Islamists or any other culture or religion they decide they don't like at the moment.

PLEASE educate yourself before bringing up such ridiculous ideas.

But the organizations that call themselves Satanists do not do those things. A lot of claims of what Satanists do have been invented by Christians looking for someone to persecute. Just look at what has been claimed about Jewish people over the centuries and the insance claims about the pizza place and Hillary Clinton.

The beasts of the field are sacred.

If a place of business has a problem with what people have on their shirts, or whatever, they should post what the rules are....even if they are dumb rules that I disagree with.

Then, if somebody breaks one, or more, of the rules they should boot them out, and NOT apologize.

An airline isn't just an ordinary business. Every time they operate their planes, peoples' lives are on the line.

It's a different environment than just buying a product or service.

I'm willing to put up with an extra amount of bullcrap if it means the process runs more smoothly and safely.

I would find "Hail Satan" to be funny under almost any other circumstance, but I have to confess, I don't find it funny on an airplane.

I know I'm going to get flamed for this, but I don't care.

Flying is already stressful and sucky enough. Do we really need to wear confrontational clothing to make it worse?

Also, git off ma lawn!

And before you say "OK Boomer" I'm solidly Gen-X.

I am an extremely nervous flier. The first thing I do when I board a plane is tell the cabin crew, "Hi, I'm going to be your nervous flier today!" I don't need anyone adding to my stress.

If I saw someone in that shirt...no kidding, I'd want them to come sit by me. I'd find it calming because clearly here is a person who isn't ruffled by much.

However, that's me and my beliefs. I can see how it might disturb someone else.

But honestly, I don't think it's an airlines' place to pass judgment on clothing unless someone is wearing something that would interfere with another passenger's comfort or safety. Though frankly, I can't think of apparel that would violate the personal safety criteria. Comfort on the other hand? I once sat next to a woman who had on a HUGE hat with a monstrous brim and feather that took up the air space over both the seats on either side (she had the middle seat). Um, really? Where in the world did she think she was that this kind of hat would be a good idea? LOL!

Christians have as much of a reputation for molesting/raping people and Satanists to for sacrificing pets/babies. Except unlike the bogus and thoroughly discredited "Satanic panic" of the 80s, clergy sexual abuse is real and well evidenced and, disturbingly, still ongoing.
