I'm home. Barely.

You people are the best. A big thank you from me to those of you who offered good wishes last night/early this morning.

I had a huge post almost done and I lost it, so I'll keep this short.

Spent a month in the ER today. I don't think I ever post about my health, but I did last night because I wasn't sure I'd be back.

Summary:

1) Not the cold or flu.

2) Incompetent doctor. Just bloodwork, no physical exam. Spent a total of 2 minutes with me. Did not read triage chart before he came to see me. Had to tell the whole story again. Ran out of the room when I tried to ask a question. Never saw him again. Caught the word "dehydration". Gave me an antibiotic. I'm not sure what for. Had to threaten to walk out if I was not discharged in 5 minutes, after waiting a few hours for the doctor to come back. Got discharged with written instructions which have no relationship to my ailment.

3) Got screamed at by a crazy woman in the waiting room at 2 AM because they called someone back before her who was there after her. I gently explained triage to her. She got up in my face and got some of her spittle in my eye. Probably caught the clap.

4) Got loudly informed (by a man I presumed to be in his 50's), as did the rest of the people in the waiting room, about the "fucking bitches" who work at the hospital. Watched a 6'3" security guard try to throw him out to no avail. Watched him cower and leave as 3 female nurses made him leave.

5) Did I mention I probably caught the clap?

6) If I ever post again that I am going to the ER, I hope someone hits me in the head with a brick.

7) See my primary care this week. Maybe I'll find out what the fuck happened.

8) Feeling a bit better. Feeling sort of human.

Thank you again people. Means a lot.

Please never let the med staff underserve or bully you. You have a right to decent healthcare and if you aren't getting it you should demand it. Don't let them push you around.

Always insist upon better care and you will eventually get it. I am just glad that you are feeling better, but don't be put off by a bad experience. Be aggressive in the future with the hospital staff because your life may depend upon it. Please let us know what your primary care doctor says and I hope that you will find yourself in good health going forward.

Sat Dec 7, 2019, 05:04 PM
Dec 2019

I’m serious. Cypro will cause terrible, permanent damage to your body. I’ve had chronic painful tendonitis all over my body for over 5 years. It can cause your Achilles tendon to snap even after you stop taking it. It has crippled me and ruined my life. All physical activity has to be done in moderation because when you injure your tendons you have to NOT overuse them. People in your life will all want you to go out and force yourself to do exercise and take long walks because they will not understand that injuring your tendon’s is not the same thing as straining a muscle.

It all happened when I had a UTI infection that put me in the hospital. I had a team of doctors that happily gave me Cypro because it’s great on bacterial infections, and mine was life threatening.

I am truly and profoundly angry at doctors now. I ignore them. As a matter of fact I despise most of them. I’ve been to a doctor once and that was to because I had a bladder infection and you have to go to get an antibiotic because it’s the only way it will go away. It’s also extremely painful. Needless to say I ordered the doctor not to give me Cypro. He told me his office doesn’t ever prescribe Cypro because one of their doctors is now messed up for life because he took it. They stopped that condescending crap of discounting you and trying to say it’ll all go away. Fuckers!

There are alternatives and these should not be first choice drugs. I do not know your situation though and they are powerful and can prevent death but some docs had them out like candy and use them as first med overkill

I’ll watch the other ones too.

Cipro affected almost all my tendons, so I know what pain is. The worst is when I first move like getting out of bed or standing up from a chair and walking. Thankfully I’ve found relief in Arnica and CBD so I only take Tylenol when I need it. But the other effect it has in me is nerve damage in my legs and feet. If I stand for any length of time my thighs become numb from the knees to my hip and the shoulder of my feet have that fuzzy, needle pricky feeling all the time. I have been alleviating that with vitamin B12. Actually I get enough relief to function by taking a one a day vitamin for women.

And on day 8 of bad cold and cough I feel you.

Last night in total desperation and bad cough i went diving into my bathroom cabinets for anything i could find. I have been trying to go natural tea, juice, water, soup, zinc, C, but kept getting worse.

I found DM cough med and a Codeine one from 3-4 years ago. Guess what I chose after having a bunch of hardly sleeping and knowing i needed sleep?

It worked i slept a bunch taking more at 2am when i got up.

My fever finally went back to normal and while still sick I think I see a light of health. It was never high mostly mid 99’s but enough to make on top of symptoms me feel off and last night after shower it went up to 100.7 that didn’t help.

Sorry for long rant of illness, like you i never post i am sick.

Hope your doctor figures it out.

Relax and treat yourself for making it through that harangue.

And while you may not have come out of the ER with the answers/care that you wanted, the information from the lab tests at the very time of your situation will probably be helpful for your primary care doc, etc. Duh, I know, but far be it from me to not state the obvious.

Am just lookin on the bright side - I’d be hacked off, too, about such an ER experience. I’ve had to search for the usefulness of various doctor visits, and if nothing else, had to turn to the sketchy law of averages out of frustration. Mostly has panned out thus far.

Everyone I encountered was incompetent.

Managed to get into to see my primary care doctor a few days later and ended up on
Hydrocodone and a muscle relaxer for a rotator cuff injury I got when the E.R. attempted to do a cat scan
and hurt my left shoulder.

Have had x-rays and am seeing a specialist next Friday.

Have you got a vision of the way this situation would have played out if we had Medicare for All?

I'd hope that there'd be a more equitable distribution of health care workers.

(I think doctors are required to talk to you about what they've read on the triage chart to ensure they are treating the person whose triage chart they've read.)

He has a chronic condition, Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome. He’s had it since he was three (he’s in his early 30s) but last year it got very bad. 23 ER trips in 6 months, a dozen resulting in hospital stays. SAME ER, mind you. He has a specialist there and a long, long history.

In the past few years they’ve decided it’s from smoking pot. He does but it’s not. He didn’t smoke at three, four, five...but suddenly the level of care and compassion deteriorated. We always have to go with him. To say he’s incapacitated is an understatement. He can’t communicate, he can’t do anything but continuously, violently barf until he’s dehydrated and gasping. There’s a specific protocol in his file and we have copies. They don’t follow it. I don’t know why. We have to fight for it. Now sometimes he gets someone familiar with him and they get it. But if not, it’s hell.

Once they left him do long he tore his esophagus and ended up with a tube down his throat for two days, drugged unconscious. Once when I had to go home they turned him onto the street at 3 am, so drugged he didn’t know where he was. Fortunately he could call me and I managed to find him. I almost killed somebody. I thought of suing but we need them.

Happily, the specialist found a preventative protocol that has kept him relatively symptom free for the past year. We’ve got fingers crossed. But it’s madness. It’s prejudicial. I will never understand the willful ignorance of what they’ve been instructed to do.

Btw this is a well respected city hospital. Once he’s admitted he gets stellar care. In fact, now and then he’s been admitted to the cancer ward (only bed available) where many patients are on chemo and are encouraged to—you guessed it—help the symptoms with pot, which is legal here.

Sorry to go on and on. I am so very sorry you’ve been subjected to bad treatment. I wish I had more to say than be sure you have advocates. And get well! ❤️

I have been to an emergency room twice in the last ten years, both time on suspicion of a heart attack. Once, it was (2011) and once, it was not (2013). The first time was at home in Dallas, and they were positively wonderful. The second time was in Washington, D.C., and I might as well not have gone. If that had been a real heart attack (it was the flu), I probably would have died before they got to me. In Dallas, I was attended to within minutes.
