http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-pn-obama-immigration-regulation-20120105,0,2762934.storyThe Obama administration will announce Friday a proposed new regulation that would allow certain undocumented immigrants to remain in America while applying for legal status -- a step aimed at keeping families intact and one that may also shore up the president's support with Latino voters.
As it stands, people living in the U.S. illegally who leave the country to apply for a green card face years of separation from family members.
Depending on how long they've lived in America, once they leave they are barred from returning for up to 10 years.
(snip)
Under the proposed rule, which would not require action by Congress, people would be allowed to file requests for hardship waivers in the United States, according to a person familiar with the administration's plans. They wouldn't need to go abroad, and thus could stay with their families while their requests were adjudicated.

My wife is an immigrant and together we made it through the process. Additionally I used to run a very succesful website walking people through the immigation process.
what boggled my mind about some of the rescent debates on this topic is that some people felt they should not have to file / petition for immigration status and simply be granted Citizenship based on the fact they succesfully avoided detection for so long. If you have ever thoroughly read the Immigration Laws you would quickly realize that the majority of people here illigally would be granted immigration status if they applied

Can't have it take 2 years and then they inform you to pack up your things.
