House Democrats hope to pick up a minimum of 27 seats to reclaim the majority, most of them in states that are not battlegrounds in the presidential election, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said on Tuesday.
At an event hosted by National Journal and The Atlantic at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, Pelosi said she expects half of the pickups to come from four states: Texas, California, Illinois and New York. A total of approximately 20 will come from those states and Maryland, Washington and Arizona.
The remainder, Pelosi said, will come from states where President Obama is actively campaigning: Florida, Ohio, Iowa, Nevada and perhaps Pennsylvania.
Twelve of the seats will come from districts currently held by Republicans but won by John Kerry in 2004 and Obama in 2008, she said. Fifteen more will be in states held by Republicans but won by the president in 2008. The opportunity is thereits this close, she said.
Although House Republicans are confident they will add to their majority, Pelosi described the estimates as the most conservative, cold-blooded, clear-eyed, worst-case scenario, citing a recent Democracy Corps poll showing the Democratic candidate ahead by six or more points in the 27 seats.

(62,683 posts)I have been afraid they'd keep the House AND take the Senate, just based on some things I'd heard here and there. I trust Pelosi -- she knows her stuff.
Edit -- typo'd Pelosi's name!

(62,683 posts)than be blindsided. I remember when I was backing Biden, and I'd focus on all the positive reports and the positive responses I'd get when I was phoning for him (dismissing those who were for a different candidate). I had myself convinced that he'd place second in Iowa (!) and that once he got a lot of press, others would fall in line once they got to know him. Watching the Iowa returns was surreal -- was there a glitch in the system? Were the votes not showng up? Something was WRONG! But no, I just hadn't been realistic. It was so devastating and crushed me so badly, I never will allow that to happen again.
So your post isn't raining on my parade in the least bit. I know what we're facing this time.

Man, it's going to be a long time until November. At this rate, my fingernails will be gone and I'll need to make a Costco run for Tums.

(36,466 posts)After California's bizarre redistricting, I've lost all sight of what's going on. Seems all the congress critters are just playing musical chairs, jumping from their old district to the new ones; lots of old blue districts will turn red while the red districts will turn blue. It's confusing because I see nothing but a net zero gain. What races should I be looking at?
