(146,334 posts)I don't do things like appear at congressional hearings, but I do have a handsome leather briefcase. My lovely wife bought it for me as a Christmas gift at least 10 years ago. It's tan leather and has many divisions and pockets to help me organize things. There's a zippered, padded compartment for a large laptop computer that I no longer carry, since I can do everything on my smart phone now, and other pockets of various sizes that accommodate electronics and other things.
She bought it on sale from Land's End at a great, low clearance price, and I've been carrying it for years. Not to carry papers to hearings, but as my under-seat back on flights. I can pack for a three-day weekend in that briefcase if I carefully roll any clothes I'm taking and put them in the large central compartment. The bag seems to have no limit as to how far it will expand. There is always room for one more item in it. Meanwhile, there are pockets for my device chargers, for the devices, for my passport, for my pharmaceuticals in their nifty seven-day compartmentalized box, for the over-the counter remedies I sometimes need, and for several pairs of glasses, since I lose them regularly. and for everything else I might need on my trip. There's even a pocket with magnetic closures on the outside of the bag for my travel documents and a newspaper or magazine. On the outside, under a flap with two buckles, are two large, deep pockets where I can put the contents of my trouser pockets. my wrist watch, and my belt when passing through the TSA security screening.
I can kick it under the seat of any airliner, and drag it out with my toe under the handle if I need something in flight. It also has a wide, adjustable, and comfortable shoulder strap to let me go hands-free when I'm walking. It is a wonderful briefcase. Almost magical, it sometimes seems.
I would suggest such a bag for the Minority Counsel. Perhaps Land's End will have another sale where it can be purchased for just under $50. A great bargain!

(15,662 posts)Democratic Party. In a way, I kind of like the simple utilitarian use of that grocery bag as an oversized briefcase. It's certainly easier to pack and rummage through than the big, bulky leather, zippered, clasped and/or buttoned briefcases normally used. Poking fun or ridiculing can be cathartic for us, sure, but it also fuels the perception that liberal Democrats are "elitist". It's really such a minor event/quirk/vision (whatever you want to call this particular use of a re-usable grocery bag); is it really worth poking fun at?
I also sometimes wonder if some of these visions aren't actually staged to elicit "elitist" ridicule and in so doing legitimize that label in the minds of voters. Perhaps that's why Jordan never wears a coat?
Just saying. Flame away.

(129,567 posts)I expect he did it for "product placement" and to elicit attention.

(15,662 posts)But I also think there's a case for "frugalism". Personally, I'd certainly go for the grocery bag over an expensive bag like that, but then I don't really care what people think when it comes to stuff like that. In Castor's case, I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't do it just to get the response he got here.

(129,567 posts)When my mother died a few years ago, I bought one from Staples so that I had all her files (copies of death certificates, insurance policies, utility bills paid, annuity/social security paperwork, house title, bank statements, etc) to take when talking with the attorneys and funeral director.
And yes - he did it for attention to feed the GOP circus show. It is the epitome of "unprofessional".
KPN
(15,662 posts)I just think that sometimes we get in our own way. The GOP has honed it's Machiavellian skills to a very fine edge over the years. I'm sure they do this stuff on purpose ... for a purpose. So why fall for it?
BumRushDaShow
(129,567 posts)A tweet was posted and people commented on it regarding what amounts to the common theme of the unprofessional manner in which the GOP has handled this entire affair. What impact would this have on the testimony going on considering that 99% of the populace does not post on DU?
Okay, you disagree. That's fine.

(35,749 posts)I plead guilty. I am at work today and I brought my notebook computer in a canvas bag that has the name of my library on the front.
Oh yes, I have computer bags. Official computer bags! Three of them, as a matter of fact, with all the storage spots, envelopes, zippers, etc. Why am I not carrying it?
Because a bookcase fell on my desktop and I had to put all the books somewhere. They are blocking the closet door to where my bags are stored.

(65,490 posts)my teaching needs because they held more & were easier to carry, & as you say, easier to rummage through to find stuff in a hurry.
As a woman, I found that hanging those bags from my arm was much easier than carrying a heavy briefcase or any other bag by a handle, and that hand was left free to carry coffee or a water bottle, since I use my right hand for my cane.

(430 posts)...but that zipper and latch thingy was a little too complex. You know, they didn't teach how to use those at Trump U.
BTW, Jacketoff Jim Jordan agrees with this as he says those button thingys are just too hard to understand on suit coats.
