(43,214 posts)She took over the House this year and immediately let Trump know she wasnt going to take any shit from him.
And ultimately she let forth impeachment, the biggest political matter of the year. Which even if it doesnt end in Trumps removal from office is still a signal that some Americans still believe in the rule of law and oppose unchecked abuses of power.
Greta is great, and I admire the hell out of what she has done, but Time has fallen into a bit of a rut recently picking activists over newsmakers lately.

(43,214 posts)It's for the year's most significant newsmaker. We all know that Hitler and Stalin both were given the title, as were some other less than desirable folks. Trump "won" it in 2016 (usually whoever is elected President always wins it in the year of their election).
Of course, unlike Hitler, Stalin, or Trump, Speaker Pelosi is an admirable figure. But she was also arguably the most significant newsmaker of the year. At least in this country.
So giving it to activists (as has been more and more the case recently) might sound like the right thing because it feels like an honor and we like to honor people who advocate doing right.
But it's not really as much of an honor as it is a title. And as much as I admire Greta and her cause, in terms of strictly the headlines this year, I think Speaker Pelosi's influence was far more prominent.

(6,449 posts)Pelosi is a newsmaker here in the States but Greta is making news EVERYWHERE. Internal US Politics aren't as important as the global climate.

(53,410 posts)Greta is huge in the world.
Pelosi is saving Democracy in the US. Greta is saving the planet.
Both are vitally important. I have no problem with Greta being the person of the year. It doesnt diminish Pelosi in the least.

(115,888 posts)Greta Thunberg is internationally known for her activism (sometimes we forget that there is a whole world outside our borders) - and she is both an activist and a newsmaker. As much as I admire Pelosi, Greta deserves this recognition more than anyone, especially since she embodies the efforts of young people with respect to climate change.

(43,214 posts)...speaks about is far, far from being solved. Hopefully she will have an impact on policy going forward, but that remains to be seen.
Pelosi, on the other hand, represented the first time Trump--who desires to be more of a dictator than a President--has had any sort of opposition. And there were numerous times throughout the year where she stood up to his demands and he eventually folded. Meaning that there was still a hope for democracy in the country. And this all culminated at the end of the year when the impeachment inquiry was announced.
Person of the Year is more of a title than an honor. I think what Greta has done merits her being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, which is a true honor for her advocacy. But in terms of news that actually took place this year, I don't think she was as notable as some others.

(33,036 posts)snip--"For each, the decision to step forward came at a cost. None expected to become household names or to find their faces on televisions across the country night after night. And though each followed the rules and used the proper channels, some have found themselves vilified online, their decades of government service impugned and their background questioned. Several have been assailed publicly by the President."

Donald Trump Jr. denounced the choice of the 16-year-old as a marketing gimmick that failed to honor the Hong Kong Protesters fighting for their lives and freedoms.
Thunberg, 16, the youngest person to receive the title in Times 92-year history, was recognized for her fearless efforts raising global awareness about climate change, the magazine said.
Thunberg was chosen from Times five finalists, which also included the anti-government protesters in Hong Kong, President Donald Trump, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and the anonymous whistleblower whose complaint about Trumps July 25 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky sparked the impeachment probe.
