I think they may be getting desperate.

In a three minute period they slung bible verses, dead babies and "socialist!" in defense of Trump. They are swinging for their base of stupid people.

I think the GOP itself is indicating a lot of desperation among them. They are becoming obsolete and demographics and age are a factor here. They are going to die out and why not try to grab and hold power in the meantime? Fascism? Tyranny? Desperation can get people to abandon their values.

Plus, it is not good to make decisions and speeches when you are desperate and afraid. This works for us, though.
