In Russia, President Vladimir Putin was the most outspoken voice on the issue speaking during his annual press conference in Moscow on Thursday. He called the reasons behind the impeachment vote “far-fetched” and added: “The party that lost the (2016) election, the Democratic Party, is trying to achieve results by other means.”

Australia’s Sydney Morning Herald splashed an analysis of yesterday’s historic vote on its home page. Noting the likelihood of Republicans acquitting Trump following next year’s trial, Carl Hulse wrote that Democrats have put themselves on the line “not for an outcome but for a principle.”
