Iowa Woman Ran Down Teen With Car Because She Was 'Mexican': Police

Authorities said the 42-year-old Iowa woman intentionally “ran over” the girl as she was walking to an activity at her middle school near Des Moines.

Updated Dec. 20, 2019 12:45PM ET

An Iowa woman has admitted to authorities that she intentionally hit a teenage girl with her car because she was “Mexican,” police said Friday.

Nicole Marie Poole Franklin, 42, was charged Thursday near Des Moines with attempted murder after allegedly running down a 14-year-old as she walked to Indian Hills Junior High School on Dec. 9 and then fleeing the scene, the Clive Police Department said. Franklin is being held at the Polk County Jail.

“Franklin told investigators that she ran the girl over because she was, in her words, ‘a Mexican,’” Clive Chief of Police Michael Venema said in a Friday press conference.“She went on to make a number of derogatory statements about Latinos to the investigators.”

Authorities said at 5 p.m., Franklin drove her 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee onto the sidewalk near the middle school, where the girl was walking “on the way to an activity.”

Driving a 22 year old Jeep, probably rusted out in the fender wells. She's not in the upper middle class, money-wise, clearly. She probably thinks life has treated her poorly and hasn't gotten what she deserves, so she took it out on someone she perceived as a foreigner. Now, she'll get what she deserves, finally, I hope.

Even in Iowa, you can't just run someone down on the sidewalk, even if that person is a "Mexican." She's gonna be real sorry she did that soon.

But, see, this story isn't about me. It's about a racist woman who lives in Iowa who deliberately drove up on a sidewalk to run into a 14-year-old girl. That's what this is about, not my opinion of Iowa.

The woman is from Clive, Iowa, a small town of about 15,000 people on the outskirts of Des Moines.

" As of the 2010 census, the racial makeup of the city was 88.1% White, 2.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 4.0% Asian, 3.4% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.5% of the population."

It used to be a coal mining town, but that industry is gone. It's now an exurb of Des Moines, with some agricultural and other economic features. The Hispanic population has more than doubled since the 2000 census.

I've never been there. Have you?

You see, I live about a 1 mile and a half north of where this happened. I've lived my entire life in Iowa, and the last 35 years in Des Moines, or it's suburbs. I'm a life-long Democrat.

There is ZERO agriculture in Clive; it is totally urban. It would properly be referred to as a suburb of Des Moines. Unless you live in the area you would won't know when you cross from Des Moines (where I've lived) into Windsor Heights (where I've lived)and then into Clive, or from Clive into West Des Moines or Urbandale (where I currently live).

And by the way, Polk County voted for Hillary by a margin of more than 11 points. Polk County is where the section of Clive where the incident occurred is located. But you already knew that. Right?

but that simply isn't true.

For a good quarter of a century, the states of Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin took turns consistently placing in the top three in SAT testing. They would switch positions each year, but always landed up there.

And I want to remind DUers that Iowa was the first Midwestern state to allow same-sex marriages. This particular lady probably didn't vote for the legislators who voted in favor of the law, but an entire state shouldn't be condemned for one moron's actions.

My state of Wisconsin elects deplorables like King too, and I complain about the confused electorate on here almost every day, but I also know some decent people here to balance things out.

Fri Dec 20, 2019, 05:11 PM
Dec 2019
Hate crimes reported in Minnesota increased more than 22 percent, rising from 119 in 2016 to 146 last year.

Police agencies reported 48 anti-black hate crimes in the state last year, 21 anti-white, 21 hate crimes motivated by a bias against the LGBTQ community, 16 anti-Jewish and 10 anti-Muslim crimes, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension reported.
The increase came even as overall violent crime in the U.S. fell slightly, by 0.2 percent, after increases in 2015 and 2016.

Minnesota has consistently provided data to the FBI but police departments across the state approach classifying and reporting hate crimes differently.

According to the FBI’s latest report, more than 310 agencies reported zero hate crimes in their jurisdictions last year — including in Bloomington, where members of an Illinois militia allegedly bombed the Dar Al Farooq Islamic Center in August 2017. Three members of the militia are awaiting trial on federal hate crime charges.

Maybe Iowa should take a page from MN's playbook and just not call them hate crimes.

You ascribe to me words I did not say with your suggestion "and you're not sure that's a hate crime?". That statement is incorrect.

IMO, your explanation of why this should be a hate crime is stated well with the four reasons you list.

Also, her antiquated feelings toward minorities was that if she killed one, the baby machines would just replace her in 9 months. The names Franklin and Poole aren't the same as Yellow Feather, so somewhere down the line she came from an immigrant family too.

Woman accused in racist attack is charged in 2nd incident

December 23, 2019

CLIVE, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa woman who told police she intentionally ran over a 14-year-old girl because she believed the girl was Mexican has been charged with a hate crime for an incident that occurred shortly after the girl was struck.

Nicole Franklin, who also goes by the name Nicole Poole, was charged Sunday with assault in violation of individual rights and with operating under the influence, second offense. Her attorney didn’t immediately return a call Monday from The Associated Press.

Franklin was charged with attempted murder following the Dec. 9 attack on Natalia Miranda in the Des Moines suburb of Clive. Miranda suffered a concussion and severe bruising and was hospitalized for two days. Clive police have said Franklin, 42, admitted steering her SUV onto a sidewalk and running over the teenager, who was walking to school to watch a basketball game. Franklin then fled the scene, Clive police said.
