(951 posts)I don't know why people refuse to see this. Yes, it has other meaning if used appropriately, but this is absolutely a real hand gesture signaling white power. Denying it at this point gives them even more power, cause they get to claim it's just a game or whatever...

Go back to trump's public appearances/public speeches....he would emphasize a point he was making with that hand signal. He used it as a dog whistle to his crowd, flagrantly in front of all the people in America.......

What you think youre saying: That sounds, great! Perfect!
What youre actually saying: Youre an asshole.
The OK Sign, made by connecting the thumb and the forefinger in to an o shape, has varying meanings around the world. In the U.S. and Australia, it means okay. In many Middle Eastern countries its viewed as a threatening sign while in Turkey its used in a derogatory way to refer to someone as homosexual. In Mexico it can be used to call someone a coward and in Brazil its the equivalent of the middle finger.

(32,645 posts)I know this because I've been to Germany several times and I know Germans who live here in the US. When Germans give the circle-finger sign (the A-OK sign) they are saying "You're an asshole." It's the German equivalent of an American giving someone the finger.
In the US we've used the circle-finger sign to mean A-OK at least since World War 2 and maybe before that. The White Supremacy people have co-opted the sign for their own use, so now the rest of us can't use it any more.
Anybody who uses it NOW is telling the world "I'm an asshole!"

(3,268 posts)Ok has been around but A-OK is post WW2 and was popularized by the Mercury program:
The phrase "A-ok" had been in use at least as far back as 1952, when it appeared in an advertisement by Midvac Steels which read "A-OK for tomorrow's missile demands"[1]
US Air Force Lt. Col. John "Shorty" Powers popularized it while serving in the 1960s as NASA's public affairs officer for Project Mercury, the "voice of Mercury Control". He was reported as attributing the expression to astronaut Alan Shepard during his historic Freedom 7 flight, which was the United States' first manned space flight.[2][3] However, in his book, The Right Stuff, author Tom Wolfe wrote that Powers had borrowed the expression from NASA engineers who used it during radio transmission tests because "the sharper sound of A cut through the static better than O".[3]

(3,075 posts)i'm sure they think it's funny its a perfect troll scheme. They get to claim it's a "game" and that WE lib-ruls are too sensitive about everything. It became a prank on the website 4chan, it was called Operation O-KKK. I would bet that all these assholes doing this sign on camera know exactly what they are doing.

(3,075 posts)it started as a "prank" to draw attention and make the left talk about it, tweet about it, post it to social media.
Since they made it up, they got a kick out of seeing the reactions (trolling). from the article:
The OK hand gesture originated as one of these hoaxes in February 2017 when an anonymous 4channer announced Operation O-KKK, telling other members that we must flood Twitter and other social media websites
claiming that the OK hand sign is a symbol of white supremacy. The user even provided a helpful graphic showing how the letters WP (for white power) could be traced within an OK gesture. The originator and others also suggested useful hashtags to help spread the hoax, such as #PowerHandPrivilege and #NotOkay. Leftists have dug so deep down into their lunacy, wrote the poster, We must force [them] to dig more, until the rest of society aint going anywhere near that s***.
Following the cues of the hoaxs originator, 4channers created fake e-mail and Twitter accounts and bombarded civil rights organizations, journalists, and others with messages furthering the OK hoax. It is possible that some of the hoaxers were racists or white supremacists themselves, as parts of 4chan are something of a haven for them, and the site itself has been a source of adherents of the alt right segment of the white supremacist movement.
other Prank/Trolls were initiated for the same purpose. clip from the article:
"One 2017 4chan thread devoted itself to brainstorming the next such hoax. We need to make some pics that are warning parents about what the dab really means and spread it around, wrote one 4channer (the dab is a popular dance move). Another 4channer suggested spreading the notion that clapping was anti-feminist.
One of the more successful of these recent 4chan hoaxes, also originating in February 2017, was the concept that white supremacists were drinking milk to show the superiority of the white race and the purity of white milk. One hoaxer trying to convince the Anti-Defamation League explained that they are chugging milk in front of people of color, quoting racist books and phrases and supposed statistics about people of color being lactose intolerant. A number of media websites bought into the milk hoax."
I hope that is more clear?

(6,278 posts)Both things are happening these days - use of the gesture by racists (originally just to troll but now sometimes with all sincerity) and innocent everyday use. Being dogmatic about it is what gave the gesture its power - people read a hoax story and bought into it.

(6,448 posts)Pointing up, it makes the letter K--as in KKK.
Pointing down, it makes the letter P. I'm working on what that stands for, other than what's in the next sentence.
Either way, it's obvious there is a W and a P (using the wrist) for White Power. These morons are learning marksmanship, bomb-making, and hand-to-hand combat skills. With body armor, they become Robo-dork.
Remember, McVeigh and Nichols got their skills at Fort Benning. These scum are at the Harvard of military schools. Their training will be far superior to those other domestic terrorists.

(6,278 posts)Holding the hands low makes it hard to point the fingers up because it would require an unnatural wrist bend.
This is also, to my mind, evidence in support of the "circle game" conclusion. Holding the hand low is apparently part of this dumb game.

(12,165 posts)pathetic group of people in the US.
They vote for shredding the safety net that they disproportionately rely on, accept catastrophic levels of national debt which will make the lives of their children harder, and elect politicians that implement policies that lead to hospital closings in their rural communities.
I come from a poor, rural white family. I left the backwardness and ignorance behind the moment I left for college. But theyre still there, smug in their MAGA beliefs. And for the ones who arent hardcore Trump supporters, they are apathetic and dont vote. Most of them are still in poverty and rely on shrinking government programs like Medicaid, disability payments and food stamps. They complain when their meager allotment of food stamps get cut.
They are so driven by their hate of diverse, progressive America that they will elect people who are making moves that lower life expectancy. The white supremacy movement is a cancer that needs to be ripped out of the fabric of our society. They seek to destroy the body of America.

(6,278 posts)I won't reflexively translate that as a "white power" symbol unless the context makes it pretty clear what's going on. That's because for 53 years of my life it carried no racist meaning, that racist meaning was manufactured by what started as a hoax, and I and many others I know have no interest in advancing white nationalism are may still be prone to making that hand gesture without thinking about the new meaning it sometimes carry (i.e. I can't say for certain that I've never signaled "OK" that way since the white nationalists started using it to troll us). The ADL web page on it is my guide, and their bottom line is this:
"Use of the okay symbol in most contexts is entirely innocuous and harmless."
In the case of the okay gesture, the hoax was so successful the symbol became a popular trolling tactic on the part of right-leaning individuals, who would often post photos to social media of themselves posing while making the okay gesture.
The tweets are loaded with proud racists openly flashing that symbol. The context for the military academies was a "College Gameday" program, which typically features college students horsing around. To me, that context is fundamentally ambiguous. It could be as sinister as white nationalism or as dumb as the circle game. I'm inclined to believe the results of investigation into the incident. To ignore context makes as much sense as concluding cultures that used swastikas were Nazis. And in the end, it was the gullibility of us on the left that turned this symbol sinister, by giving idiots who thing the purpose of politics is to "trigger the libs" exactly what they thrive on.
