Millions sickened across America as flu season ramps up

The flu virus continues to spread across the U.S. with millions of illnesses estimated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. According to the CDC, an estimated 3.7 million people have had the flu already this year with 32,000 requiring hospitalization.

Nearly 2,000 people, including 19 children, have died so far, claimed the CDC. There is elevated flu activity in nearly every state and 30 states report the virus as widespread.

Tamiflu and Xofluza and other antiviral medications have shown to be 99% effective against the flu viruses the CDC has tested. Experts are encouraging people to get the flu shot if they still haven’t. The vaccine is safe for anyone over 6 months of age, asserts the CDC.

After getting the shot, it is recommended people cover their mouths and noses when coughing and sneezing and washing hands regularly with soap and water.

Oh, boy!

Sing along with me:

Staying Home for Christmas

I'm staying home for Christmas.
Don't you count on me.
Check your phone,
And your email.
Then Yuletide cheer you'll see.

Christmas Eve will find me,
Healthy as can be.
I'm at home for Christmas,
Without the flu you see.

so the number of cases is going to explode about a week from now.

And as the article says, practice good hygiene. If someone sneezes right in your face, not much you can do to help that.... but I'm amazed how often I see people eating after shaking hands, pulling door handles, without washing their hands in anyway. A lot of colds and flus transfer simply by you touching something a sick person touched then eating or touching your nose/mouth and delivering the virus right into your respiratory system.

Clean your hands ALWAYS before eating with your fingers.

And if you are already sick.... that thing where someone makes a fist about 4" from their mouth and then coughs... yeah... don't do that. That is absurd. That does nothing. Doesn't stop ANY of the virus coming out of your mouth and is actually WORSE than not covering your mouth at all because not only have you not stopped any of the virus, but now you have infected your hand which you then use to open doors, flip light switches and shake other people's hands with.

If you need to cough of sneeze, press your whole mouth into your elbow crook, or pull your shirt up over you mouth, to provide some level of containment of the infected water droplets coming out of your mouth. NEVER bring your hands into the equation and if you do, wash them before you go spreading your virus to everything you touch.

I have one patient in particular I think about ,this person has a very remarkable story, the kind you could write a book or make a movie about. I wish I could tell their story. They are fully vaccinated but also immunosuppressed. I’ll be so pissed if they get the flu because of selfish anti vaxxers.

and they refused the flu vaccine!

That's right: they were worried enough about a mild respiratory infection like a cold to come to the clinic, but refused medical advice to immunize against a respiratory infection that can kill.

I just can't get my head around that kind of thinking; or that kind of non-thinking, actually.
