Divorce is condemned far more than homosexuality or abortion. Matter of fact, I don't even think they are mentioned in the New Testament but divorce is mentioned like 35 times.

When a man and woman love each other, they get into bed and wiggle around and sometimes a baby is the result.
I think that's how I remember my Mom explaining it.

was about 2nd grade when someone came to school with the whole "penis goes into where the girl pees" concept.
We figured that just that act wouldn't create a baby, so we determined that...................the guy had to pee inside the girl.
That was actually kind of close for a 7 year old.

BTW, the guy I was discussing that with in the 2nd grade was also the expert who first told the guys what a whore was - that was a man who liked other men and one would dress up as a woman and they would dance and kiss.

It has blown Columbia away, and is about as cool as Charleston now.
While the Upstate is still way to the right and redneck, downtown Greenville is an oasis in the midst of the Bob Jones atmosphere. Great restaurants and night life.

when you point out that there is not a single direct prohibition in the New Testament to homosexuality (or abortion for that matter).

When they argue that the Old Testament calls for the death penalty for homosexual acts, ask them if they are an orthodox Jew, or a Christian who accepts the New Testament, which Jesus clearly identified as replacing most of the structure of the OT.

A co-worker from years ago was born into a Reformed Jewish family but married a guy who had been raised Orthodox.

She used to joke that he abandoned the Orthodox approach when they moved to the South and he first ate Barbecue.


Seriously, this does point out a significant disconnect in the thinking of fundies; i.e.: Of course I ignore the Old Testament bans on pork, shellfish, etc., but I fully endorse the death penalty for gays because the Bible tells me so.

There's a story of a Roman centurion who came to Jesus and begged him to heal the Roman's...servant or slave is how it's usually translated. As a Southerner, I wondered about that, having never heard of anyone who cared about a servant or slave that much. Later I learned that the word could also be translated as "young sexual companion." Boy toy, perhaps?

Jesus was touched by the man's love and promised to come to his house right away, and the centurion said that he wasn't worthy, that he knew Jesus could just speak the word and his friend would be healed. And Jesus praised the man for his great faith.

Can you believe Jesus totally neglected to go all Westboro Baptist on the centurion?

If John would publish a pocket size guide that had his brilliant, 100 percent accurate, responses to every right wing twisted bible quote, he would be a wealthy man.
