Trump must remain in power to stay out of prison: Watch what he does after Senate acquits him

https://www.alternet.org/2019/12/trump-must-remain-in-power-to-stay-out-of-prison-watch-what-he-does-after-senate-acquits-him/

snip of article

The danger of impeaching Trump without removing him from office has always been that we will have blown the last “check” we have on him. When the Senate lets him off without even a slap on the wrist, Trump will be even more unrestrained than ever. Steel yourself. We’re about to get Donald Trump squared.

The last time he felt he’d gotten away with his crimes was when special counsel Robert Mueller failed to find evidence of a conspiracy between Trump’s campaign and the Russians during the 2016 election. Less than 24 hours after Mueller lamely testified as much to Congress, an apparently giddy Trump picked up the phone and called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and tried to get yet another foreign leader to help him steal an election. He offered Zelensky a bribe to get him to investigate his likely opponent in 2020, Joe Biden, and tried to strong-arm Zelensky into making Ukraine the scapegoat for the 2016 Russian hacking of Democratic emails.

He won’t be able to stop himself from doing it again. He’s not going to stop at doubling down. He’ll triple down on everything he’s pulled over the last four years.

He’s going to call Putin and promise to lift the sanctions if he chips in to get him re-elected. He’ll call Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the president of Turkey. He’ll talk to President Andrej Duda of Poland. He’ll reach out for help from every wannabe Mussolini from South America to Singapore. And he’ll get it. They’ll find ways to slip him money under the table. They’ll turn loose hit squads of trolls to infect American social media with campaign propaganda.

He’s going to put the full weight of his Department of Justice behind efforts to suppress the votes of poor people, young people, blacks, Latinos, women, the LGBTQ community — in fact anyone likely to vote Democratic. He’ll call for “investigations” of every Democratic presidential candidate who’s going up in the polls and announce he’s got “dirt” on every one of them. He’s going to unleash an army of surrogate liars to spread falsehoods about his opponent. He’s going to go from one rally a week to two to three; maybe he’ll hold a rally every other night. He’s going to turn Air Force One into an airborne criminal command post.

He’s been practically shouting, “Catch me if you can.” When he gets caught, it’s “What are you gonna do about it?” His Republican backers in the House mimicked Trump’s attitude during the impeachment debate on Wednesday. They didn’t bother arguing that Trump had done nothing wrong. Not one of them stood up for their moment at the mic and defended Trump’s character. They like it that he’s a ruthless, soulless thug. He’s their kind of guy, the Republican president they’ve been waiting for since Ronald Reagan.

What a depressing article, we have a full blown terrorist in the WH.

2. He's going to pardon everyone when he leaves and

He will resign a day or two before the next inauguration so that Pence can give him a full pardon for all federal crimes. They will all walk away without the threat of federal prosecution hanging over their heads.

5. Doubtful

Pence is going to want his own pardon in his pocket leaving this mess and he’ll get to say he was the 46th President. That would be funny though.

But history would look at his short term presidency poorly. He was president to keep the previous president from being held accountable.

Maybe it would result in a constitutional amendment attaching some limits to the power to pardon.

Agnew got nailed for corruption and was thrown out, so when Nixon bailed they installed Ford and he immediately pardoned Nixon.....

Maybe they should be launching an impeachment of Pence along with Trump?

Not that it would really make any difference, The Republican Senate would acquit him also...and anyone else that gets impeached........

16. Believe it or not he can probably pardon himself.

It's never been tested in court obviously but the pardon power is broad and has no restriction against it.

18. If he resigns two days before the next inauguration, that will mess up everything

Think of all the 46 hats, banners, shirts etc. that will be printed up. They would have 48 hours to change them to 47.

8. He can still be impeached again for other things he's done.

Several hundred other things would be my estimate.

9. He most likely was going to do all that regardless of impeachment.

He said he would accept "help" from foreign governments to win the next election. Said he'd done it before and wouldn't hesitate to do it again. And he did.

10. I couldn't agree more with all of this......

I don't think we have to wait for the election, the nightmare could start the minute the Senate acquits him:

A few nights ago Rachel was interviewing a former long time executive of Trump’s real estate business…….

The woman said... "When this impeachment is all over, and knowing him, he will come out okay, …..HE WILL EXACT REVENGE ON A LOT OF PEOPLE,.... A LOT OF PEOPLE....(her emphasis not mine)……..

He is not quite yet at the point where he can just march them out into the woods and shoot them like all his tyrant heroes/buddies do in other countries.......

I seriously think that Americans are not grasping just how serious/critical this whole matter has become.....
Americans should be deeply frightened at what we are seeing in front of us. (Let alone especially all that we can't see that they are doing and have been doing for three years behind the scenes.......)

13. The senate wll never get a chance to acquit Trump
Sun Dec 22, 2019, 09:17 PM
Dec 2019

because Nancy will never sent the articles to the senate.

She will insist that the senate treats the articles seriously, and Mitch will never agree to that.
So, stalemate.
Dems then need to make a lot of noise in the media, along the lines of 'Why won't Mitch give the articles some serious treatment?'
And develop more articles of impeachment.

Even the thickest Trump supporter will eventually figure out that Mitch can't do that, because it would prove Trump is guilty.

Dems can play the waiting game, but time will just erode the credibility of Mitch and the GOP.

"Even the thickest Trump supporter will eventually figure out that Mitch can't do that, because it would prove Trump is guilty." ......needs re-thinking. We all would have thought this for the last 37 months, with all the major stuff Trump, his administration, and the entire Republican party have done. Any reasonably intelligent, rational, critical thinking individual would have seen thru his contradictions, hypocrisy, and BS the first month of his administration.....none of the Trumphumpers have done anything, but rally around him even more radically.......
