How to Track President Trump

By Stuart A. Thompson and Charlie Warzel
Dec. 20, 2019

If you own a mobile phone, its every move is logged and tracked by dozens of companies. No one is beyond the reach of this constant digital surveillance. Not even the president of the United States.

The Times Privacy Project obtained a dataset with more than 50 billion location pings from the phones of more than 12 million people in this country. It was a random sample from 2016 and 2017, but it took only minutes — with assistance from publicly available information — for us to deanonymize location data and track the whereabouts of President Trump.

The device’s owner was easy to trace, revealing the outline of the person’s work and life. The same phone pinged a dozen times at the nearby Secret Service field office and events with elected officials. From computer screens more than 1,000 miles away, we could watch the person travel from exclusive areas at Palm Beach International Airport to Mar-a-Lago.

The Mrs. & I am in our 70's. We grew up with a rotary dial phone attached to the wall. Any call that was not local was a dial '0' for Operator and ask for Long Distance. We didn't move from landline to smart phone until about 10 years ago.

We're just not into having a phone available to us wherever we go. Our phone stays home about 99% of the time, whether we are home or not. I have a GPS in the car. I use it maybe once a month since just about everywhere we go we already know how to get to.

We're not easy to track. Of course we are boring as all get out as well. LOL!

if you care about this.

I routinely have my phone location setting on "off" and don't use any apps that need a location.

It needs to be plugged into the cigarette lighter and turned on to work. It gets turned off and unplugged when not in use. And yes, the phone location setting is set to "off".

Although we are completely boring people. We rarely travel more than 5 miles from home.

& I know if police interview someone & they tell them that were in a certain area, police can tell from your cell phone if you were in that area, I believe the only way to prevent that is take the sim card out.

I read that part of the technique used to locate Osama bin Laden was tracking the cell phones of people he had connections with; they took out their batteries when they neared his hideout, and put them back in after they thought they were a safe distance away. We tracked the locations where they were "lost" and reacquired, drew a rough circle around those points and searched that circle until we found his hideout.

you can be tracked if the authorities suspect that you've committed a crime. The solution to that is either don't do anything illegal or disable your phone!

Also, anyone that someone is stalking, or children that have a phone.
It's perfect for anyone planning a crime against a particular person.

If your cell phone is to work at all then nearby cell towers MUST ping your phone to know how to route your incoming and outgoing calls. It's not magic that makes your cell phone ring when you get a call. It's the fact the the nearby cell towers KNOW where you are and who you are so they can signal the right phone to ring. If your phone was not being pinged every few minutes it simply would not work.
