if you are on any kind of blood pressure meds you might not want to read any further.............
This is an actual thing Baquet said on MTP just now........
and I'm directly quoting this to make sure I get it right........
"We have to do a better job understanding why some people support Donald Trump. I agree with Marty (the other guest from the Wapo) we cannot dismiss everyone that supports Donald Trump. I think we have to get out in America much more than we do and talk to people."
He goes on and then repeats.......
"I think we cannot dismiss everyone that supported Donald Trump and we just cannot dismiss them."

And that's where it took all my willpower to not smash my television.
drumpf voters are being dismissed? THESE ARE THE ONLY PEOPLE WE EVER HEAR FROM. In 2017 i remember article after article after article of how drumpf voters felt about immigration or taxes or healthcare or the latest freaking netflix movie. It was way back then, the thread was long gone now, but I remember making a point here of googling looking for articles about Clinton voters being quoted and I found only ONE and that was a roundtable discuss with BOTH Clinton and drumpf voters.
So to hear this ASS up there on national TV acting like the problem with journalism is that drumpf voters don't have a voice? FUCK ALL THE WAY OFF, ASSHOLE.
So just out of curiosity I just googled "New York Times Trump Voters" to see jsut how "ignored" the poor oppressed drumpf voter is by the Times.
OH LOOKIE!!!!!!!!!! Here is an article about persons who voted Democrat in 2016 but now support drumpf
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/26/upshot/democratic-trump-voters-2020.html
Here's an article about why drumpf voters stick with him
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/03/opinion/trump-voters.html
Here's an article about drumpf voters "need for chaos"
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/04/opinion/trump-voters-chaos.html
Took me all of ONE MINUTE to find THREE drumpf voters articles JUST IN THE TIMES since September.

(50,303 posts)imagine what it will take. Recently I saw an interview with one of the farmers who voted for Trump. He's barely getting by, of course, but he's sticking with Dear Leader because he just knows it's all going to work out well in the end. They're hopeless.

I know it is acceptable to use that, but it's prefered to use who when talking about people.

(1,733 posts)...the *majority* of 2016 voters rejected him and continue to oppose him.
If they are going to pretend to cover both sides, they have to *actually* cover both sides.
Go ahead. Ask me why I despise Donald Trump. How many column/inches have you got?

(3,974 posts)In the 90s the Times actively pushing Whitewater despite the Clinton's already cleared of any wrongdoing by the Arkansas Attorney General.
During the 2000 election Times reporters and columnists were very negative of Al Gore, including lying about him and even going as far as changing what he said to attack him.
In 2008 one of their top columnists spent all her time attacking Obama giving him the nickname "Obambi".
And in 16, the Times was the main news organization reporting the Email story and had to issue several corrections for spinning facts to be more critical of Hillary Clinton.

(53,061 posts)My professional life has changed markets and I am now in seniors homes 4-5 times a day in conservative areas.
A majority of the people I call on probably voted for Trump.
Some are ideologically right wing and racist but I see another kind of Trump voter, lonely, broken people who are afraid. Many are living alone and their children are addicts, ex cons, or no longer interested in them. The fact that they warm so quickly to my visit informs their isolation.
I believe these are the people he is talking about.
My take is that they like Trump and Fox on a purely emotional level. They accept them and tell them that they are part of their club.
When they listen to Democrats or the left they feel judged. If they don't understand climate change then they must be stupid. If the prospect of millions of migrants and refugees coming to the US makes them uncomfortable then they must be racist.
Of course I am not talking about the neo Nazi, alt right, outright racist, or nut job conservative.
I am talking about "all the lonely people here did they all come from" folks.
I remember one fellow I talked with who was all for Trump. After some conversation he told me he. Had friends who were in the weatherman underground, that he worked in manufacturing in aerospace and was a shop steward for 15 years, that he worked for Democratic candidates.
Then I started asking about different issues like universal healthcare. Down the line left leaning. I asked of what policies of Trump he supported. None really but then he said "Trump likes me".
This is the same country that elected President Obama twice. I believe that there are 10-15% of the population that are old and isolated and vote for the candidate not on policy but on their perception on how the candidate sees them on a personal level, they perceived Obama liked them. Many of these people have soured on Trump but need a friendly face like Biden to change.
That is why we need a candidate that embraces people and doesn't lecture or talk down to them. If Warren is the nominee then she needs to make an adjustment in delivery (and I believe she can). Mayor Pete, Klobuchar, Cory B, excel at it. Sanders would give us a McGovern level wipe out.
I agree with the OP that we don't need to hear from the deplorable that champion Miller and spew their anger. We do need to understand the lonely broken person in the corner who liked Obama (and may have voted for him).
Here's the deal; if we understand and convert 1/3 of these people ( maybe 15% of the Republican party) the Republican Party will face a historic loss and we will take the Senate. If we don't Trump win or barely lose which would also be a disaster.
The only thing that can restore this country is not a Democratic victory but a landslide victory.

(13,776 posts)Thank you for opening my eyes and even my heart and explaining what seems unexplainable.
Its sad to think about, but you obviously encounter these people on a regular basis, whereas Ive just made assumptions about trumps supporters stupidity (and I do still think the majority are stupid, full of hate, or both).
I hope our candidates already recognize what youre saying, or if they dont already, that they recognize it in time.

My gut feeling is that it will happen. The consistent number for Biden is, I think, a strong indication that people get it.

If we go hardcore on ideology we will miss a historic opportunity.
For those that voted for Trump but are having real misgivings.
I ask them what Democratic candidates they like I am stunned by 2 things:
1) the level of knowledge they have on our candidates
2) in going down the list I get a lot of "no"s but virtually every time they respond to Kobluchar with a "I like her".

(19,970 posts)no longer have an ideology. This is purely a referendum on Trump, and the Democrats need to give that 10-15% who could swing, every incentive to do so, or at least stay at home.
