'No exoneration' if impeachment trial 'rigged' by McConnell, senator says

Republican Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski put her finger on a key issue of an impeachment trial when she expressed concern about the Senate leadership coordinating with the White House on the trial, according to one top Democrat.

"Is Sen. Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader, going to try to rig this trial, working in lockstep with the president and his lawyers? Or is he going to allow a fair trial?" Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., said on ABC's "This Week" Sunday. "We keep hearing President Trump say he's going to be exonerated. Look, if you have a rigged trial there's no exoneration in acquittal."

ABC News Chief White House Correspondent Jonathan Karl asked Van Hollen if Democrats would be able to convince Republican senators to vote with them, but Van Hollen said it was too early to see how Murkowski and others would vote.

"They're going to have to answer for the fact that they don't want to see anymore evidence, right?" he said. "Those who vote against witnesses and vote against documents are essentially telling the American people they don't want to see anything. They don't want to hear anything. And in doing so, you're complicit in a cover-up."

Thanks for saying it clearly, Senator Van Hollen.

... by saying that the Senators don't want we, the citizens, to see and hear the evidence. I think the Senators know what the evidence is and that it's damning. If we learn what they already know the Repubs are sunk for good.

But what's the better option? They know that he's going to be "acquited"... so the best they can do is stain those republicans who are vulnerable to being stained.

Those are the words that frame the issue cleanly. The Administration wants a show trial. No witnesses and no ability to follow the evidence is a show trial. McConnell and Graham promise their oaths for the proceedings will be ignored and they will run it to get the outcome Dear Leader demands, it's a show trial. Looking at Russian disinformation instead of what the Con actually did, is a show trial. Anything less than a fair hearing, with relevant witnesses and evidence, and the Senate acting with independence, is a show trial.

that fulfills that pre-ordained acquittal breaks their oaths of office and makes all acquitters a conspiracy to obstruct justice.

They can drag their feet, put together a fake trial plan and rules, but the evidence is clear now.

All who follow McConnell's lead are impeachable, likely for high crimes and misdemeanors.

Senate henchmen should all be thankful that Speaker Pelosi is saving their jobs.
