Maybe that will get the attention of the kool aid drinking Trumpsters. It seems they are immune from thinking outside their little bubbles. Im not hoping for a major recession, but Americans love their gas guzzling lifestyle and it wouldnt hurt for some of them to realize the idiots actions have real consequences.

(92,224 posts)Now the stock market doesnt think the Mideast situation is anything to be concerned about
Then again, for the last two years the market essentially wrote off the trade war
I think the reason for the disconnect is due to the index funds

(56,828 posts)where I pass on my way to work every day has gone up 13 cents/gallon in the past week.
However, I remember from the early 90s, when Iraq invaded Kuwait, my gas price went up 20 cents/gallon the very next day.

Good perspectives here:

West Texas Intermediate crude for February delivery CLG20, +2.25% was last up about 2% late Sunday, while the global benchmark, March Brent crude BRNH20, +2.65% , inched past the $70-a-barrel mark after the U.S. Defense Department warned over the weekend that there was a heightened risk of retaliatory Iranian attacks against Saudi oil facilities.

We should all be bracing for a ferocious response, Helima Croft, chief commodities strategist for RBC Capital Markets, warned last week. The stage is set for a retaliatory spiral that could keep markets on edge well into 2020.
U.S. stocks slid Friday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.81% posting its worst day in four weeks. Futures trading late Sunday indicated further losses when trading begins Monday, with Dow futures YM00, -0.42% down more than 100 points. S&P 500 futures ES00, -0.42% and Nasdaq futures NQ00, -0.47% also fell.

But there is no denying the enormity of long-term geopolitical repercussions of the latest events, and even more so when considering the possible knock-on destabilizing consequences which may impact Iraqs fragile state, Innes wrote. Indeed, this is a considerable tail risk for oil prices given Iraqs status as OPEC #2 producer.
Some economic experts were already saying the stage is set for another huge global recession well before these recent events.

(922 posts)Has reshaped the oil industry. In the past ANY sign of instability in the middle east sent prices way up.
We depended on the Saudis to keep OPEC members in line. Mining the straits, drone strikes none of these had any effect on prices in the past year. Minor increases yes but nothing like the 80's or 90's.
I payed $2.70 gal yesterday. Average is $3.15.

Perhaps not.

The greatest impact would be on the people who can least afford it, is that what you want?
Maybe you didn't think this through carefully.

(5,270 posts)Gas so far is unchanged since last Friday in my area. But it went up .30/gallon shortly after Trump took office, blamed on fire at Colonial pipeline and then other things as I recall and gas has never come back down to where it was back then. But all the Trumpers I know have never complained once and in fact will tell you that gas is less, so I doubt they'll blame him this year.

(42,714 posts)You may have seen a spike of .30 shortly after Trump took office and maybe gas hasn't come back down to where it was before that, but on a national basis, the price of regular gas when Trump took office was around $2.30 a gallon. It stayed at around that level for several months before beginning a relatively slow ascent, peaking at around $2.94 in June 2018. After that it dropped again, bottoming out at $2.24/gallon in January 2019. Over the past year, it fluctuated, rising to almost $2.90 in May but dropping back into the $2.50-$2.55 range by the end of the year.

(42,714 posts)In the time Obama took office in 2009 until election day, the price of gas climbed from just under $2/gallon to around $3.75 on election day (down somewhat from a peak of nearly $3.90/gallon earlier that year. Yet Obama was reelected and the economy kept improving. Indeed, it wasn't until late 2014 that the price of gas finally broke, dropping from around $3.35/gallon in the third quarter to under $2.30 in the fourth quarter.

(100,081 posts)They won't give a shit about gas prices no matter how high they can get. They'll keep watching Fox News and listening to AM hate radio, and watching assholes like Hannity, Limbaugh and Pirro spin it into that it's always the other guy's fault. Now it's even worse because everyone has their own channel now and they can say whatever they want and there's no one to fact check them. :
