To be sure, Team Trumps absence of credibility, coupled with the political context, made it difficult to take seriously the White Houses line about an imminent attack, necessitating an immediate assault. But the reporting brings the problem into sharper focus: Team Trumps official story about one of the presidents most dangerous decisions doesnt appear to be true.
All of which leads to an important follow-up question: if the airstrike wasnt needed to prevent an imminent attack, why exactly did the president green-light such a radical offensive?
Trump thought the dangerous new posture would help his weak image. The Washington Post reported over the weekend that the president was motivated to act, at least in part, by what he felt was negative coverage after his 2019 decision to call off the airstrike after Iran downed the U.S. surveillance drone, officials said. Trump was also frustrated that the details of his internal deliberations had leaked out and felt he looked weak, the officials said.
Trump was preoccupied with his predecessor. The same Post report added, The president has long fixated on 2012 attacks on U.S. compounds in Benghazi, Libya, and the Obama administrations response to them, said lawmakers and aides who have spoken to him, and he felt the response to this weeks attack on the embassy and the killing of an American contractor would make him look stronger compared with his predecessor.
With his impeachment trial looming, Trump saw value in wagging the dog. The New York Times Rukmini Callimachi noted that Soleimanis ?whereabouts have been known before, and his resume of killing-by-proxy is not a secret. So why launch this specific strike, to the surprise of the presidents own team? As Callimachi put it, its difficult to decouple Trumps decision from the from the impeachment saga.
In case this isnt painfully obvious, its a problem that the official White House line is unraveling. Its just as significant a problem that the alternate explanations are indefensible.

Somewhat sane, and sane people know t-rump, administration, cabinet and the Republican party are liars and only care about themselves.
Plus, grandmothers, mothers, aunts, nieces, sister, cousins, ok women in general do not want their sons, fathers, uncles, brothers, cousins, ok men in general to go to battle.

(3,396 posts)The Trump administration is already in danger of losing control of the swift chain reaction and political storm unleashed by its killing of Iran's top general, Qasem Soleimani.
President Donald Trump's claim that the drone strike last week made Americans safer is being challenged by cascading events that appear to leave the US more vulnerable and isolated.
The administration's basis for the attack also came under renewed suspicion after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told CNN that it was not "relevant" for him to reveal how imminent the attacks on US interests were that Trump said Soleimani was planning.
In proliferating signs of the deepening crisis, Iran on Sunday announced that it was shaking off restrictions on its uranium enrichment under the Obama-era nuclear deal. Iraq's parliament voted to expel US troops. A US exit could imperil its fight against extremism and consolidate Iranian influence in Baghdad. Dissent emerged inside the administration over the President's vow to strike cultural sites or civilian targets if Iran mounts reprisal strikes. Administration claims that the elimination of Soleimani, Iran's Middle East terror chief, sparked celebration in Iran were confounded by Tehran's orchestrating of Soleimani's funeral rites to launch a propaganda campaign to heal national divides.
Washington's European allies, meanwhile, distanced themselves from Trump's assault. The US-led ISIS coalition temporarily stopped action against the terror group to protect Iraqi bases from Iranian-backed militias. And in a new sign of widening gaps between Iraq and the US, Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi said he had been scheduled to meet Soleimani on the day he was killed to discuss an initiative to ease Iran-Saudi tensions.
In Kenya, three Americans were killed in an attack on a military base by Al-Shabaab, a jihadist group. The group follows a Sunni strand of Islam while Iran has a Shiite Muslim majority and there was no immediate link to the killing of Soleimani. But the attack was a reminder of both the vulnerability of US personnel to terror attacks and a sign that other US adversaries might try to take advantage of the tumult for their own ends.
The growing international tumult was matched by a worsening confrontation at home with Capitol Hill Democrats and Republicans becoming even more estranged over the President's impeachment trial, a drama that was triggered by Trump's handling of another foreign policy issue -- Ukraine -- and his efforts to use his power to coerce political dirt on his domestic opponents.

(9,291 posts)on how much finically this stupid stunt is causing taxpayers again? All the troop movements, activating the guard to full time . On and on.
Republican voters, I use to think voted for republicans because they are cheap and dont want to help other citizens. Now, all they do is allow their head clown to waste money, huge sums and say and do nothing. I wish we could sue Trump, based on his lies he told and force him to fund our government back.

(14,492 posts)* appeasement of Israel and much needed boost to their far-right factions,
* appeasement to and boosting campaign support from Republican neocon supporters frightened by Bolton's fall,
* punishment for recent militant attacks on American interests in Iraq, and as many others have said....
* to distract from impeachment proceedings and budget deficit woes.
Regardless of his motives, IMO it will go down in history as one of the worst national security and diplomatic blunders in our history.

(4,341 posts)surveillance drone"
I read this and it bothers the hell out of me...And let me be clear, I am not defending Iran on anything, but...
USA sends a surveillance drone to Iran (a drone is unmanned), Iran doesn't like the fact that they are being spied on and they also know that drones do shoot and kill people, so they shoot the drone down, no US lives are lost but republicans expect whoever is president to attack a country because they shot a drone that was spying on them, or maybe even planning an attack as drones are used to do so? In Florida that is called "Stand your ground", someone just made you scared about your safety, you shoot, and all is well...which it has proven to be a crazy law, but nonetheless worth for comparison.
I really do not understand that logic...You spy on someone with a robot, they shoot it down, and you are supposed to start WW-III because of a robot so that millions of innocent people can get killed...Man, are we screwed out of our heads.

(11,885 posts)lying , for personal political gain is corrupt. He shouldn't be allowed to remain in his position for doing this. By the gop refusing to remove him now shows how little they care about these brave people defending our country for us. trump shows again he only cares about himself, not our service members. My god when will the gop put an end to this nightmare. I guess they'd rather destroy our country , our Democracy, and our national security to stay in power.
