Breaking: US-led anti-ISIS coalition to withdraw from Iraq

http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/274188

The US-led coalition to combat the Islamic State terrorist organization will withdraw from Iraq in response to a parliamentary vote, Reuters reported Monday.

"Sir, in deference to the sovereignty of the Republic of Iraq, and as requested by the Iraqi Parliament and the Prime Minister, CJTF-OIR will be repositioning forces over the course of the coming days and weeks to prepare for onward movement," Marine Corps Brigadier General William H. Seely III, the commander of Task Force Iraq. wrote in a letter to the Iraqi Defense Ministry's Combined Joint Operations Baghdad.

The decision was made following the decision of the Iraqi parliament to expel all US troops on Saturday. The parliament's decision is nonbinding.

Another report from Reuters in Australia also has this story. Found on Google News just now. It's less than half an hour old.

I wouldn't take this as gospel at this point, but it's very interesting.

BREAKING: In a letter to the Iraqi military, Marine Corps Brig. Gen. William H. Seely III says that U.S. forces will be relocated "to prepare for onward movement" and says that "we respect your sovereign decision to order our departure.”A U.S. military official confirmed the letter's authenticity. This is an updating story.

More reporting will be following these early reports shortly and things should be more clear.

That was fast. I'm betting this will be top of the news very shortly.

I first saw it in LBN here.

The Washington Post is pretty careful about verifying such things, so...

So, who knows what they're up to there. My best guess is they're going to be relocating at least some of the combat troops and leaving the Iraqi support (training) troops in place.

It was just a standard 'we're leaving your country per your request' template letter which wasn't supposed to be sent out.

I'm sure it happens all the time in the US military.

BAGHDAD, Jan 6 (Reuters) - The United States-led military coalition against Islamic State said on Monday that it was pulling out of Iraq and would be repositioning forces over the next few days and weeks, a letter seen by Reuters showed.

“Sir, in deference to the sovereignty of the Republic of Iraq, and as requested by the Iraqi Parliament and the Prime Minister, CJTF-OIR will be repositioning forces over the course of the coming days and weeks to prepare for onward movement,” read a letter from United States Marine Corps Brigadier General William H. Seely III, the commanding general of Task Force Iraq.

The authenticity of the letter, which was addressed to the Iraqi defence ministry’s Combined Joint Operations Baghdad, was confirmed to Reuters independently by an Iraqi military source.

“We respect your sovereign decision to order our departure,” it said. (Reporting by Ahmed Aboulenein Editing by Chizu Nomiyama)
