US allies distance themselves from Trump decision to assassinate Suleimani

Netanyahu tells security cabinet meeting they ‘should not be dragged into it’ as Saudi minister urges restraint in Washington.

US allies have distanced themselves from Donald Trump’s decision to assassinate Qassem Suleimani, as millions of Iranians took to the streets to mourn and demand revenge for the assassination of the country’s top general.

Both Israel and Nato stressed they were not involved in the airstrike on Thursday. The US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, has already expressed disappointment in the lukewarm reaction of Washington’s European allies.

But the response of Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, was particularly striking, as he has been one of Trump’s staunchest supporters on the world stage.

He told a meeting of his security cabinet on Monday: “The assassination of Suleimani isn’t an Israeli event but an American event. We were not involved and should not be dragged into it.”

Careful, Bibi. Trump doesn't care much for disloyalty, even if your statement is 100% true.

In many countries, this is where the generals step in. In the US system, it's up to Moscow Mitch to make that ominous "walk to the white house." This is really quite a big thing. What is happening here is exposing to the world that the US has no allies in the world.

I think the more telling point is that the condemnations have been fairly muted (to this point).

(IMO) --- We've actually provided the rest of the world cover .. in being able to say "well, it was that crazy assed Trump .. and everyone knows he doesn't pay any attention to us." .. for an action that they cannot approve (and are fervently praying doesn't bleed over into their territory) .. but really aren't shedding any tears over either.

which should be worry enough, it's interesting he is departing from his/their usual posture of sabre-rattling and chest thumping behind their "big brother", the U.S.

He may not want to rock the boat much because of his newish, weaker government, but I'm thinking Israel now realizes just how suddenly dangerous and unpredictable this situation is. Perhaps this is a quickly realized game changer for Israel.

I would guess the second part of the old trope "live by the sword, die by the sword" has shown up on their horizon.

The Pentagon PR made it clear it was Trump's choice from a range of options, for example.

Trump is way out on a limb, and he hasn't a clue about it. He thinks he has the Midas Touch.
