During World War II, Operation Foxley was a 1944 plan to assassinate Adolf Hitler, conceived by the British Special Operations Executive (SOE). Although detailed preparations were made, no attempt was made to carry out the plan.

All attempts on Hitler's life were made in Germany, first by political opponents, and then by German resistance.

WWII was not a pretty war. The allies firebombed multiple cities specifically to inflict civilian casualties.

There were no holds barred when it came to attacking command and control centers, and that included hitler directly.

Had we had nukes, they surely would have been used.

That is precisely why the war crimes treaties were ratified. Nobody wanted that to happen again.

They were used after the fall of germany, on japan.

They weren't ready for hitler, nor were they needed at the end. They would have been used in lieu of d-day however.

early in the Afghanistan conflict and that raised a bunch of eyebrows.

Terrorists can also become statesmen. I won't lose any sleep over him getting killed, but does it advance the interests of the US.

If that can be proven then we have an Iranian general who ordered a Lebanese militia/terrorist group in Iraq to attack a US military base which would be an act of war.

but he was pure military and not a mix of military and government like Qasem Soleimani.

The bigger question is how does this advance the aims of the US and what is the follow up. Also we were in a cool war with Iran and not a hot war with Japan.

That's probably the closest equivalent. Note that war had been declared, and the US had stated all Imperial Japanese air traffic was subject to action.

Trump isn't even going to put boots on the ground, he is going to pound Iran with air and missile strikes while blockading the Gulf of Oman. The US hitting military targets doesn't really bother me I just hope the Pentagon balks at strikes on civilian targets.

"The Assassination of Reinhard Heydrich"

One of the architects of the Final Solution, the ruthless Heydrich had engineered the 1942 Wansee Conference that planned the extermination of all Jews in Nazi occupied territories. During 1938 he had helped prepare Kristallnacht, pogroms against Jews throughout Germany and Austria. Within three days of becoming the Deputy Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia September 27, 1941, he had 92 people executed. As a child Heydrich had been taunted for his alleged Jewish ancestry, though an official Nazi investigation claimed he was pure Aryan. His love of music was obviously no impediment to his brutality.

Operation Anthropoid
Planned by British special operations and supported by the Czechoslovak government-in-exile, the preparation for Heydrich’s assassination called Operation Anthropoid involved officers Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš as the major players. They were airlifted from Great Britain to Czechoslovakia along with seven other Czech soldiers in December of 1941. After scratching plans to kill Heydrich on a train and in his car in a forest, the plan was to attack him at a sharp turn in the Libeň district of Prague on his way from his home in Panenské Březany."

The Allies aided resistance movements in occupied Europe who assassinated numerous Germans.

He was such a tantrum-throwing fuck up that the Allies were afraid if he was taken out, they'd have to deal with someone competent.

Sound familiar?

Gen. Soleimani was not the head of state. As others have indicated Yamamoto and especially Heydrich and much more equivalent to Soleimani and his position in Iran's military/ political leadership.

doesn't make him a world leader. Comparing him to FDR or Churchill is clown shoes crazy. Meanwhile in Iran, they just announced they will continue killing gay people because they are a country of morals. Meanwhile here on DU there are post with people hoping Iran makes good on it's threat to hit trump properties, and without saying it but it's implied, that they don't care about the civilians that might be killed in such attacks, as long as it fucks trump.

Stop the planet, I want to get off.
