The preparations that Iranians made in 1988 to revenge the accidental shoot down of an Iranian airplane were incredible. Iranian planners figured out about how many would be flying on a Pan American flight, (about the same as were killed in the first shoot down) and carried out the revenge. While Trump's shoot down might have been impulsive, the Iranian response won't be. Response will be as well planned as can be. The exact opposite of how Trump decides things.
Here is a post, (at this link) devoted to that response in 1988:

(9,481 posts)I feel like there is a push to sow disinformation to make Iran responsible for 9/11 and terrorist attacks that they were not.
Just like 2002/03.

(81,531 posts)In dozens of interviews conducted by this reporter in recent weeks with Iranian exiles, academics and government and intelligence officials in the United States and Europe, the blind faith of these teen-age martyrs was frequently cited as symbolic of the fanaticism that is part of life today in the Islamic Republic of Iran. An East European journalist who witnessed one of these human-wave assaults, in which tens of thousands of young Iranians have gone willingly to their deaths, could hardly believe what he was seeing, as first one boy, and then another, detonated a mine and was hurled into the air by the explosion. ''We have so few tanks,'' an Iranian officer explained to the journalist, without apology.

(1,366 posts)The link in the original post gives the details of the USS Vincennes shootdown of the Iranian Civilian airliner Flight 655 and the loss of 290 people, but the added text does not elaborate on a statement from Abolghassem Mesbahi, a co-founder of the Iranian intelligence service, that attributes the Pan Am Flight 103 destruction over Lockerbie to Iran.
The word of caution here is that the USS Vincennes link is of what is a questionable website just looking at all the "conspiracy" posts I see. There should be no dispute about what the USS Vincennes did however.
An on-line search shows such commentary by this man in regards to Iran and Lockerbie.
And a search about Abolghassem Mesbahi also reveals a time when he retracted his testimony in a attributing blame for the killing of Iranian dissidents in Berlin back in 1997.
The official story of the Pan Am loss is attributed to Libya and of course that may be questionable.
The addition of the Captain Rogers mini-van incident in the replies gives some context to the potential of Iranian retaliation.
