Senate Republican leaders are preparing to move forward on a set of impeachment trial rules without Democratic support.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is on the verge of having sufficient backing in his 53-member caucus to pass a blueprint for the trial that leaves the question of seeking witnesses and documents until after opening arguments are made, according to multiple senators. That framework would mirror the contours of President Bill Clintons trial and ignore Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumers demands for witnesses and new evidence.
No final decision has been made, but in a brief interview, McConnell said he would address the possibility of spurning Democrats on Tuesday afternoon.
GOP leaders are expected to finalize their vote counts at their first party lunch since the holiday break and Senate Majority Whip John Thune (R-S.D.) said on Tuesday that McConnells leadership team is trying to get consensus among Republicans about how to go forward.

As predicted. They'll pay for this once the whole sordid story is outed. Fuck them...

(36,482 posts)5. I don't have much money so I will wait until after the primaries
and contribute to dem senate challengers then. Cory Gardner is top of my list since he's my senator, but I will have money to send to McConnell's challenger as well!

Remember that date. That is our opportunity. Let's start working on that. We can't change the Senate until then.

If it does, Moscow Mitch will have tons of 'splainin' to do as to why he didn't allow a fair Senate trial.
I hope.
