Republicans meeting behind closed doors this morning to count heads...

If they have 51 votes, and it now appears that they may have their caucus in line, they are ready to vote on the rules for the trial, without any Democratic Party input.

Once they make their announcement, perhaps this afternoon, Nancy Pelosi will name the House Managers. She will likely not commit to a definite date to turn over the Articles?

The Republican plan is to hear the case as presented by the Managers, and then vote on whether or not to call any witnesses. They will attempt to shut down the trial at that point. That is their plan.

He's using that power to do the job they elected him to.

Not everyone agrees he's the worst thing to happen to congress since the Civil War. Sanders' wife even tweeted to all on election day that it didn't matter who they voted for, just vote. The choices were Trump/Republicans or us.

And we know what that collective wisdom has wrought.

Tue Jan 7, 2020, 03:23 PM

They need at least the appearance of a fair trial. Schumer plans to request witnesses and documents. The Rs will have to vote each request down seperately.

Yesterday on her show, Nicolle Wallace said she was looking a very recent polling and "impeach and remove" was now at 56%. IIRC, she also said hearing from witnesses has 71% approval - that must include a good chunk of Rs.

the only way for McConnell to give any semblence of fairness is to have the opening arguments, vote for dismissal (and I apologize for saying acquital earlier, meant to say dismissal) then go from there.

He has to count on the fact that the incumbants (including himself) will be able to withstand the backlash.

24. And there in lies the rub
Tue Jan 7, 2020, 03:51 PM
Jan 2020

passing a rule that doesn't allow for argument - total lack of any appearance of fairness

passing a rule that allows for limited argument - gives the appearance of fairness at the risk of evidence showing the impeachable offenses

passing a rule that allows for witnesses - guarantee of impeachable offenses being committed by the President.

They can dismiss everything, call zero witnesses, say, "what's done is done, nobody cares except libbruls anyhow," and act like nothing ever happened. Fox and Frauds will act like nothing ever happened. Trump will say he's been exonerated because he was never removed from office, and except for MSNBC, the whole thing will become a media non-event.

Don't think Moscow Mitch won't do it? He doesn't care about any appearances at all. Just ask Merrick Garland.

congress was recessed, new evidence against Trump-Ukraine has come out, a court decision results in Bolton declaring himself able and willing to testify, and Trump has committed war crimes, is possibly starting a war, and is promising more war crimes.

What would be the political advantage to the Democratic Party of not giving him more time to make it increasingly blatantly revelatory -- before all America -- for the Republicans to protect him?

I don't know what Pelosi and team know, but I won't be surprised if they wait (noting they can't stop Trump's actions as president) while they tighten what rope they have around the senate's neck.

Fwiw, yesterday Republican senator Hawley introduced a resolution requiring us to provide the articles within 25 days. He had 10 cosigners when I read about it. Of course, the only one who matters these days is McConnell.

John Bolton will not be subpoenaed by the Senate. He needs to tell the public what he knows now. And where is General Mattis after this assassination? He, too, should be willing to come forward and share what he knows about Trump’s craziness. When good people do nothing, they’re enabling the bad guys, and Trump is one of the worst. How can you be patriotic and watch someone destroy your democratic form of government as Trump and Republicans are doing? I honestly think that Republicans have latched onto Trump because they’ve lost some gerrymandering cases and he is a way to fulfill Karl Rove’s dream of a permanent Republican government with Democrats always a minority party. They’ll be cheating as never before this November and with the help of Putin’s hackers, they may keep Trump going another four—or more—years, because we won’t have a federal government left by then.
