UN highlights treaties signed by US not to harm cultural heritage sites

UNESCO on Monday noted that the U.S. has signed treaties promising not to target cultural sites in war following a tweet by President Trump threatening to attack targets of cultural significance within Iran, according to Reuters.

The U.N. body noted that both the U.S. and Iran ratified the 1954 Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict and the 1972 Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage.

Over the weekend, Trump said that the United States would target 52 unspecified Iranian sites if Iran retaliates for the U.S. killing of Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad.

Numerous organizations and people, including Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif and international rights watchdog Human Rights Watch, warned that such a move would violate international law.
