This is an offshoot from another thread earlier today on DU.
Medicare is the health care insurance program for older Americans in the United States. Here are some interesting facts for those who care to know.

At the time it was signed into law it was one of the largest public policy victories for progressives/liberals since Social Security and created a sense of medical security for retirees.

Medicare has been opposed since it was conceived however. Many people either remember or have seen the commercial Ronald Reagan made against Medicare. The GOP has been trying to alter or kill Medicare ever since.

There are people, even on DU who decry some of the shortcomings of Medicare, including me. I work with the elderly and I am often upset that Medicare does not cover dental, that it doesn't cover long term care placement for people who are not safe at home, that it doesn't cover prescriptions without Part D, which is private insurance.
People get mad at Medicare or they love their insurance or supplemental but the reality is that the weaknesses in Medicare are there for two reasons 1. because the trajectory or healthcare in America wasn't really known in the 1960's and MORE IMPORTANTLY 2. because coverage was deliberately curtailed by people who wanted to privatize the healthcare system. They wanted to both weaken any government assisted system and they also wanted to stick in profit centers wherever they could once it was established that Medicare was going to be hard to kill.
So the question is. What do we need to do to make Medicare better?

I mean Reagan and every other GOP calls it socialism even though they claim to support it to get the elder vote. People on this site have argued vehemently against Medicare for All.
How do we do what Canada and every other civilized nation does?

(8,224 posts)I got my medicare card in the mail today. I will be 65 next week. If you are applying for Social Security, as I did, then the medicare application is included, no extra steps required. For new enrollees you can call medicare directly via their helpline. All the supplements are government contractors. The guy I spoke to on the helpline took my prescriptions down and my zip code and ran the database to find me the best deal, then hooked me up with Part D on one phone call. I had to hold for about 15 minutes to get to a person, so pjck a moment when you can do something else and put the phone on speaker...
In short, no problems, no hassles and my checks start arriving in a few weeks.
I went standard medicare, not medicare advantage, because I am just opposed to the managed care profit motive.

(8,224 posts)you should talk to the medicare folks directly. There is some language in their literature about Part B penalties and having an employer based plan. I did not study it as I retired 6 months ago and have been carrying the former employer's plan on cobra at full freight. It was lousy high deductible coverage that I could not wait to be done with. So, I took Part B and am immediately saving $800 a month, nothing to actually consider there for me.
