Humans are remarkably susceptible to being told what to think. It's not presented that way, of course, but ever since Vance Packard came out with "The Hidden Persuaders" in 1957, advertisers and others have developed ever more sophisticated ways of telling people what to think.

have psyches injured in a particular way that makes them crave an authoritarian "Daddy" that tells them he can make all their problems go away. Once they locate their Leader, they experience a sense of devotion that transcends common sense or even rational self-interest.
