(63,930 posts)for a long period of time, that's why McConnell wants to derail the trial. They can't hold their urine that long. Plus they hate to do what they were elected to do. Like work.

(42,641 posts)should be reporting this on the media tonight, and putting pressure on Roberts to at least pretend to be an actual presiding Judge.

Imagine this happening anywhere ese? The GOP would be speaking of banana republics and kangaroo courts.

(269,203 posts)given the number of ReTHUGs who had left their seats, the CJ suggested a break after Crow was finished and MoscowMitch aka Nurse Ratched said they'd be breaking at 6.30. That was fucking out of order.

(26,774 posts)This was clarified during the Clinton trial. The Senate is the judge... its inappropriate to call them the jury.
And the CJ is merely the presiding officer. That role defers to the majority leader all the time.
guillaumeb
(42,641 posts)That clarifies things.
So who rules on the admissibility of evidence and witnesses?

(26,774 posts)The illustrations of judge/jury/prosecutors/ grand jury/ etc. may be helpful in some ways... but theyre just as likely to confuse the conversation.
For instance... federal juries have to be unanimous in order to convict.

(269,203 posts)yesterday.
Before I retired I discovered that many students had withdrawal symptoms during examinations as they could not enter exam rooms with phones.
Some of my peers were worse than the students. I can't imagine these Senators not having access to their phones for hours.
Hopefully some will lose it completely.

Newest Reality
(12,712 posts)When you want to destroy a country or subvert its system, conditioning the public is all about perception, not conventions. In fact, anything you can do to dilute or break with them can be useful in the long run if you have an ulterior motive for it.
They may very well find it useful if our youth lose faith in the rule of law and checks and balances of our three branches of government. If I were trying to do what I sense they are, I would act in concert to kick out the foundations, (like Trump is doing) with collective actions that both confuse and discourage the populace while simultaneously subverting the conventions.
There is a bit of a facade about who these people are and what they are actually doing. I think the cover of darkness is that it is very easy to make certain assumptions that don't lead to the conclusions I have suggested. Those kinds of assumptions would be based on factors like a strict allegiance to our Constitutional Government and an unfailing abidance in the oath of office that they have taking.
This debacle is not another round of bipartisan business as usual, so it is a good idea to divest ourselves of that diversion as a perspective. When you see GOP party members put their allegiance to their own party first and foremost, you have a grave and serious problem before you. You are already on the road to perdition as far as Democracy is concerned. The pivotal word is allegiance and We, The People, should demand that any public servant, (whom we employ to perform the common good for the common will) stand by, abide by and have no other primary allegiance than our hallowed Constitution and all it provides an stands for. Everything else must remain secondary or they have no business holding office.

Someday we will throw them from office. It's beyond my control.

(42,779 posts)This is what the "Decorum Guidelines" (not "rules') published jointly by McConnell and Schumer say:
"Senators should plan to be in attendance at all times during the proceedings."
"should plan" -- not "must be".
The "rule" was intentionally written, jointly, to be wishy-washy.
