I'm not sure how practical it would be to get rid of it but I support getting rid of the electoral college because I live in a red state and every time I voted for President the Republican won all the electoral votes so I feel my vote doesn't count under an electoral college.
I also feel like the current system is tyranny by the minority as Republicans hold the White House and Senate without really popular support.
On edit -- I also thought the EC was supposed to prevent a Trump but that obviously failed.

Maybe if Democrats take Presidency and Congress and the vast majority of states, it will be repealed. Until then, we gotta vote.

(10,900 posts)Get rid of it.
If you can't summon up 2/3 of the states to do that, then lift the artificial cap of 435 reps to make it closer to fair.

(26,109 posts)When the voters in each State cast votes for the Presidential candidate of their choice they are voting to select their State's electors....
... There is no Constitutional provision or Federal law that requires electors to vote according to the results of the popular vote in their States. Some States, however, require electors to cast their votes according to the popular vote....
... During the general election your vote helps determine your States electors. When you vote for a Presidential candidate, you arent actually voting for President. You are telling your State which candidate you want your State to vote for at the meeting of electors. The States use these general election results (also known as the popular vote) to appoint their electors. The winning candidates State political party selects the individuals who will be electors...

Like so many other things it is a remnant of the slavery situation and should have gone when slavery did.

(27,558 posts)No country in the world would put a person in office who lost the vote. It is profoundly anti- democratic and like the rest of the antiquated measures in our Constitution (largely protecting slavery) it needs to go.
I can't believe there are DUers defending this anti- democratic nightmare
