'It plays to our worst fears': Coronavirus misinformation fuelled by social media

https://www.cbc.ca/news/health/coronavirus-canada-social-media-misinformation-1.5440334

Experts say social media has increased the spread of misinformation during outbreaks

People collapsing in the streets of Wuhan, coverups of unreported deaths and travellers "escaping" quarantine in China at risk of spreading the coronavirus.

If you've been following the outbreak on social media, you may have seen some, or more, of these types of claims.

But the truth is, they're completely unverified – and in most cases, flat out untrue.

Social media has completely changed the way in which information about a disease outbreak travels around the world and experts say it's not for the better.

"When there's a lack of information and there's fear, rumours come in to fill that gap," said Alfred Hermida, professor and director of the journalism program at the University of British Columbia.

"The reason people are sharing this is because they're trying to make sense of what is a really complicated situation and also something that is potentially worrying. The danger is that it spins out of control, because fear then takes over."

Hermida began tracking the rate at which information about the coronavirus has been shared on Twitter since coverage of the outbreak began late last month.

Fear makes smart people do stupid things, like believe that racism will help somehow.

Do these videos show people collapsing in the streets of Wuhan? Footage emerges of men and women 'unable to stand in Chinese city at the centre of the coronavirus outbreak'

If true the coronavirus has unusual symptoms to say the least. In passing, I haven’t formed an opinion on their truth at this point. It is wise not to believe everything you see on social media.

I posted them merely for demonstration purposes to show what the OP was talking about.

The experts interviewed on TV seem to see this new virus as dangerous but not so overwhelming that you could simply collapse in the street.

“MailOnline has been unable to verify the videos, which are being widely circulated on social media.”

But we’ll publish them anyway!

What nonsense.

local news which reported a few sick people were being looked at. The interns all said, "Oh shit" since they knew that everybody and their brother was going to show up at the ER within 20 certain they had the rare disease. The fact that you really could only catch if you kissed a purple Sea monkey while riding a bike didn't matter (something bizarre like that) they were all sure they had the disease. When they all got to the ER to show up for work the line of patients was going out the door already.

it was pulled down within a few hours, I actually first saw it here on DU. The clip was talking about the dead bodies starting to pile up, this kind of stuff does not help, it adds validity to some of the rumors.
Most of us here follow politics, so we know how to differentiate fake from real news..for the most part, but I can certainly understand many don't.

Well, they have to eat something, after the cats and dogs and rats and bats are all gone

I hear they are digging mass graves disguised as new hospital construction too

After drumming up and hyping fear, immediately dropped it, never mentioned it again, after the election.

Which in itself is quite distressing but less so than some of the vids circulating.

Does anyone seriously believe we can trust the numbers from Chinese state media?
I don't.

And if none of those videos are real then there is like zero user content being shared by the people which is exactly what the state wants.

To have tens of millions of people, entire cities and regions in lock down is unprecedented. Building 2 new hospitals in a week because a thousand people have the sniffles? What is it they know that we don't. Even president Xi's statements are highly unusual for a regime whose main priority is generally 'Nothing to see here folks'.

Unfortunately we are going to have to wait to get the real picture I fear but hopefully it can be contained well before then.

Cities on lock down is a real thing. They wouldn't do it for no reason at all.
